Angus McNab and Mary Campbell, came to Australia on the David Clark 1839

Query by NMcNab

I am assembling a family tree for the offspring of Angus McNab and Mary Campbell who came to Australia with their nine children from Killin, Scotland, on the David Clark in 1839. I have information for the Kilmore family, some for Tullamarine, but not much for any of the rest. I'd be glad of any help.

Are these the deaths for your Angus and Mary?

You said Angus and Mary arrived in Australia on the "David Clark" in 1839 with nine children. Do you have the names of their nine children?

Yes, these look to be the ones. Angus and Mary had Janet (Jessie), John, Donald, Duncan, Mary, Margaret, Catherine, Finlay and Angus, and I believe a daughter, Christina, who died in childhood in Scotland before they emigrated.

Thanks for your help!

Cheers

Kilmore Free Press Thursday 6 January 1910
Mr Finlay McNab, one of the oldest, as
he was one of our most highly respected,
residents of the district, died on Sunday last,
aged 79 years. Deceased gentleman was a
resident of this district for over half a
century, for a time at Moranding, sub-
sequently at Puckapunyal, and later in his
well earned retirement, at Kilmore. For
years Mr M'Nab took active part in muni-
cipal work, being for a period a councillor
in the Willowmavin and Moranding riding
of Kilmore shire, and, whilst he brought
more than the average intelligence to bear
in the performance of his duties, such duties
were always performed with straightforward-
ness and liberality which commanded the
highest respect of all who knew him. Some
few years back his name was added to the
magisterial roll and here too in the perform-
ance of his duties he showed considerable
tact and ability in the conscientious perform-
ance of the duties of that office. Mr McNab
was a native of Perthshire, Scotland, and
came to Victoria in 1839. He married in
Kilmore, and leaves a widow and grown up
family to mourn the loss of a good husband
and father. Considering his age he may
be said to have enjoyed robust health up to
within a few days of his demise. He was a
good kindly neighbor, a man of sterling
qualities, and one whose memory will be
cherished by very many old friends, who
deeply sympathise with the bereaved family.
Deceased leaves a widow and grown-up
family of four sons and three daughters.
As previously stated, Mr M'Nab was a very
old colonist; he spent 70 years in Victoria,
having arrived at the early age of nine years
from Scotland with his parents and brothers
and sisters in the ship David Grant. At
that time Melbourne was only a village, and
Batman's Hill (now Spencer street station),
where the M'Nab family first settled in
Victoria, was a dense scrub. Shortly after-
wards a move was made to Tullamarine,
where they remained for a time, later on
taking up land at Beveridge, being amongst
the first settlers in that district. Early in
the fifties Mr M'Nab's people again moved,
this time coming to Kilmore, settling at
Moranding, where the family have followed
farming and grazing for over half a century.
Mr M'Nab also had a holding at Puckapunyal.
A few moniths ago Mr M'Nab gave up active
work on the farms and came to reside in the
town, where he passed away peacefully after
a strenuous life of four score years full
of good actions and free from the slightest
tarnish. The remains were interred in the
Kilmore general cemetery on Tuesday afternoon,
the funeral cortege being a lengthy one,
testifying to the respect in which
deceased was held. Rev. W. R. Jones, of Broadford,
officiated at the grave
The Broadford Courier and Reedy Creek Times,Friday 16 September 1910
McNAB-BIDSTRUP wedding
Very much interest was centered
round a very pretty wedding that
took place in the local Presbyterian
Church on Wednesday August 17th
when Mr John Finlay McNab,
fourth son of Mrs Finlay McNab,
of " Glandore" Kilmore was united
in bonds of matrimony to Miss
Fannie Bidstrup, eldest daughter of
Mr and Mrs George Bidstrup, of
"Annadale" Sugarloaf Creek, the
officiating clergyman being the
Rev. G. R. Jones. The church was
tastefully decorated by the friends
and relatives of the bride. Prior
to the ceremony music suitable to
the occasion was rendered by the
members of the Presbyterian Choir,
while Mr V. McLiesh played the
wedding march. The bride was
prettily attired in crepe de chine,
trimmed with applique and braid
and wore a very pretty dress
with honition train and Limerick
lace and carried a bouquet of white
flowers, and was attended by three
bridesmaids, Miss Bidstrup and Miss
E Zwar, who wore pale blue silk,
trimmed with net and silk braid, and
Miss McNab white silk trimmed
with lace, each carrying a crook
with violets and asparagus fern tied
with mauve ribbons in two shades.
The bridegroom was attended by
Mr Frances McNab L. L. M, who
acted as best man, the groomsmen
were Mr Ernest Bidstrup, brother
of bride, and Mr William McNab, of
Oakbank.
After the ceremony the happy
couple were the recipients of
numerous congratulations, and an
adjournment was then made to
"Annadale" where these wishes
were further added to in the
usual toasts being honored at the
wedding breakfast where a large
number sat down to the table. The
toast of the bride and bridegroom
was ably proposed by the Rev G. R.
Jones and responded to by the
bridegroom Mr A Zwar (Beech-
worth) proposed the toast of the
bridesmaids, and was responded to
by Mr Frank McNab, Mr A Zwar
proposed the toast of the chairman
(Rev G R Jones) which was suitably
acknowledged.
The happy couple then drove to
Seymour where the express was
boarded for Sydney where the honey-
moon was to be spent.
In the evening a reception was
held at which a very large number
of young people were present.
Musical items, games, etc was enter-
ed into with enthusiasm and carried
out to a late hour.
The gifts presented to the bride
were numerous and costly. Sub-
joined is the list of presents.

I'd be grateful for anything you can find out. I'm sending off this draft today, but will continue to work on it for the various branches of the family in future. When I have more time I'll follow up on births, deaths and marriages. Thanks once again for all your help.

DEATH.

Name: Mary GRANT.
Died: 1873 not recorded, Victoria.
Age: 47 years.
Father: Angus MCNAB.
Mother: Mary CAMBELL.
Ref: Registry of Deaths, Victoria.

John GRANT and Mary MCNAB had several children in the Melbourne Suburbs but I have not located a marriage for them.

Mary's brother Duncan may have married twice and needs more research. His death certificate for 1895 will name his wife and children and will make record searches quicker and easier.

Looking at the birth records eight of the nine MCNAB children all married and had a family so you have many lines to follow. For an accurate family tree you will have to obtain a few certificates along the way to confirm the blood lines.

I'm not sure what happened to the other daughter Mary MCNAB. She may have died at an early age. There was a Mary MCNAB died in Melbourne in 1841 aged 15 years, but the parents were not named so hard to say if it is her.

Hope the above helps for now.

by tonkin on 2015-08-23 22:20:54

My error.
The daughter I'm not sure about is Margaret MCNAB that died in Melbourne in 1841 aged 15 years. I said Mary MCNAB.

by NMcNab on 2015-08-23 23:05:42

I've got a marriage date for Mary McNab and John Grant of 1846, but I'll have to check where I found it. I also have Margaret dying in 1841 at 15 years.

You're right, there's a lot of work ahead checking certificates to make sure there are no errors, but for current purposes, the tree looks pretty good, certainly much better than it was. Thanks once again.
