Looking for David McDonald - where was he born and when did he arrive in Adelaide, South Australia?

David McDonald my Great Grandfather thought to be from Scotland was a gardener. Where or when he was born and when he arrived in Adelaide is a mistery.
I know he was working in Gawlertown when he married Mary Jane Smith there in 1868 and the first child David Edward was born there. The other children were born in different areas, whether this was due to moving with work is unknown, they were Charles Stewart - Kensington, John Alexander -Morialta, Albert Edgar - Norwood, Alan Christopher - Morialta, Flora Beatrice Dunrobin Estate, Brighton and Violet Lily - Adelaide
The marriage certificate does not give an age or place of birth, only that his Father was also David McDonlad.
Can anyone help me, I have a 94 year old aunt the only member of the family I know of and she wants to know more about her grandparents.
