OBITUARY

MR. R. H. KEATING.
After an 18 years' painful illness, which he bore with remarkable fortitude, Mr. Roland Howard Keating, has died at his home in Pollen Street, Thames, at the age of 54 years. Mr. Keating was born and educated in Thames, and as a youth entered the service of the Railway Department. After the South African war broke out he enlisted with many other Thames young men and saw active service. Returning to Thames Mr. Keating rejoined the Railway Department, and took a prominent part in sport. Later he went to reside in Wellington, where his illness overtook him, and he was in hospital for a lengthy period. Four years ago Mr. and Mrs. Keating returned to Thames, and although he was an invalid and practically confined to a chair, Mr. Keating's interest in his friends, the welfare of the town and Rugby football never languished. He played for the City Club for a number of years, and represented Thames in all the major matches over a similar period. After his retirement he continued to take the keenest interest in the game, and was often to be seen at Rhodes Park enjoying the sport that was no dear to him in earlier years. Mr. Keating is survived by his wife, one sister, Mrs. L. Shaw (Ngatca), and four brothers, Messrs. E. Keating (Pukekohe), 0. Keating (Wanganui), J. Keating (New Plymouth) and A. Keating, who is in the United States
