John (Jack) Whelan born 1867 New Zealand. May have lived in Wairarapa. Parents lived in Ararimu, South Auckland, New Zealand

Query by Toni_R77

Hi I'm looking for descendants of John (Jack) Whelan whose family lived in Ararimu, South Auckland, New Zealand.
Jack was born in 1867, probably in Auckland city.
His parents Michael Whelan and Margaret Doyle were married in 1866. They had a crown grant for land in Ararimu in 1874.

Jack apparently settled in the Wairarapa after visiting America and may have had 3 daughters.
He seemed to have been estranged from his family as attempts were made to contact him via newspapers.

Jack’s siblings were - Mick (Michael jnr) William (Bill) Murtagh (Murty) Margaret (Maggie) Elizabeth (Eliza) and Mary.

Jack’s father Michael snr came from Ireland by way of Australia, possibly from the gold fields.
Jack’s mother Margaret may have been in New Zealand already. Her siblings were Catherine, Ellen and John Doyle.
Catherine Doyle married Richard Phelan, and they were the Whelan’s neighbours in Ararimu.
Whelan relatives in Ireland were Eliza Bourke and Mrs. James Bourke / Burke.

Any information appreciated.
Picture is of Mick Whelan, Jack's brother.
