Best of luck in finding that one. There's a James Kavanagh recorded as born in nearly every town in in Ireland in 1848
In the FMP records I could only see one record for a 1848 birth and that was for an admision in 1863 at the Dublin Workhouse records as follows:
James Kavanagh child, Roman Catholic age 15 birth 1848 residence Ballinagee
Admitted 1863 at the Rathdown Union Workhouse

That's my problem - I have a copy of his marriage certificate and that's where I got his father's name from who was shown as deceased in 1872. Birkenhead at that time had a huge Irish population - especially after the Famine. The address on the marriage cert. for both James and Elizabeth as their place of residence at the time of the marriage was the same - they were boarders - most of the houses in that area took in boarders even though there would have been a family of 8 already in the house! I can't even find a date of death for him as there is a family rumour that he 'drowned at sea' en route to the States! This would have been between 1885 and 1900 when Elizabeth was shown as a widow.on the census.
