Both buried Taita Cemetery (Old) Lower Hutt Wellington. His burial record said "retired railway engineer" They had 3 daughters & maybe a son or his brother Joseph ASHBY & an Edward ASHBY lived with him at different times. I don't know his parents or her maiden name - any help appreciated please.

hi Marie,
James Ashby was born 16 Dec 1880, the first of 14 known children of James ASHBY (1851-1923) & Rebecca FREEMAN (1863-1924)

James married Lilian Ada Pauline HOGG on 3 July 1911

when you say the 'old' Taita cemetery, which one are you referring to?

Lilian Ada Pauline Hogg was born 7 Feb 1887, the 1st of 2 known children of James George Monro HOGG & Sarah Cecilia PAGE

James Ashby (Burke) was my grandfather, he never used the surname Burke in his lifetime.
He was the illegitimate son of Fanny Ensom nee Green, aka Burke He was born 18.03.1881 in Featherston. His father is not on the birth certificate although the notifier was one James Ashby. The puzzle remains who is James Ashby snr???
Fanny Green/Burke/Ensom arrived on the 'Arab" 26.07.1879, along with her 3 children, Emily Ensom, William & Edward Burke. Her other two children arrived on 'Staad Harlem'
in the same year, Thomas & Frederick Ensom, along with Richard Burke. She was sponsered by her brother-in-law James Dormer, of Wellington. I have all the relevant information of the Green/Ensom/Burke families if you would like it. The only question still remaining is the identity of James Ashby snr. I have a theory but no proof if you have any info along that line I would love to know

Thanks heaps ngairedith for your help !! I should be adding the word Taita Cemetery old SECTION which is located iportal.huttcity.govt.nz. I'm sorry if that was confusing. There are 6 ASHBY names on the burial register. (The HOGG maiden name rang a bell!-I think I had been told that verbally)

JENZ Thank you too for your info. I don't know where yours fit with mine if at all - however if I find anything about a Wairarapa connection, I'll be in touch. There are definitely other folk searching your lines, so don't give up! The great thing is, that all the info. is now here so we can refer back to it!!

thanks Marie,
it's just that there are a number of sections/names for Taita cemeteries. I thought you may be referring to the Christchurch Taita cemetery which is a very old cemetery and was going to say there are no Ashby buried there :)
Anyway, I'm updating the above info I sent as I now have 15 children for James & Rebecca and a little more info you may be interested in.
Will write it in a separate journal and link to here when finished

ps - my ancestors were some of the pioneers of Taita :)

Hello again,
James Ashby (Burke) and Lillian Ada Pauline Hogg where my grandparents. My mother was their eldest daughter.

Hello again, re the identity of my grandfather James Ashby, we are of the same family. I always understood he was born in Featherston, his marriage certificate to Lillian Hogg states his birthplace as being Featherston, with his mother listed as Fanny Green/Ashby. The James Ashby you allude to the son of James & Rebecca was born in Miranda, Auckland.

Hi Jenz _ I did find the snippet I wrote on ASHBY - it was not my own journal, it was an answer to someone else, which I didn't remember writing and it didn't show with my other journals. Pauline Mary ASHBY (1928-2008)is my step-brother's wife (Noel Percival HILL 1928-2005) - they married 2 Feb 1957 in Petone, Lower Hutt. (They had at least 4 children who are still living.)

Pauline's birth = Evening Post, Volume CV, Issue 142, 18 June 1928, Page 1 (Papers Past, National Library of NZ)

Re James ASHBY (1851-1923) & Rebecca FREEMAN (1863-1924) - I found this online - https://kiwiblogbus.com/2012/01/17/getting-historical-in-an-auckland-regional-park/

They are both buried here in the ASHBY pte. Cemeterey which is on the Firth of Thames, Orere Point, South Auckland. There are photos of their home & the cemetery although not named headstones. However their details are on the ancestry death records. I'm not sure how or if they are related to the JONES husband & wife buried here also, except that her first name is also Rebecca.

the 2nd child of James Ashby & Rebecca Freeman (& sister to James 1880-1961) was Rebecca Ashby (1882-1961) who married Hugh Kennedy Jones (1878-1950) in Orere Point, in May 1908. He was an estate agent in Auckland

Hi Marie,
Thank you for that, Pauline Mary Ashby & Noel Percival Hill were my Aunt and Uncle. Pauline was my mothers younger sister.

Hi ngairedith - Can we clarify please re James Ashby-Lillian Hogg, The James Ashby born 16th Dec 1880 is not the James Ashby that married Lillian Ada Pauline Hogg, he was the James Ashby born 18th March 1881, whose mother was Fanny Green/Ensom/Burke. However as his fathers name was not on the birth certificate his father is still a mystery to me.
Do you have any info that may shed a light on this, I would be grateful for any.
