Fennell NSW 1830s

Journal by JacquiQ

I have had a brick wall for quite a few years on this line. My ancestress Mary Anne Fennell married Michael Walsh in Bathurst in 1837. I believe that he was a bit older than her and he died in 1858. I have not been able to trace Mary Anne's death or a remarriage. There were 3 children who lived long enough to be named - Micheal (b1842), Elizabeth (Eliza) Mary Theresa (1843-1925) and Mary Anne (1848-1923). I can trace Eliza and Mary Anne (Jnr) but not Micheal. I have no idea about Mary Anne (Snr)'s parents or place of birth. Any leads greatly appreciated.

Is this the Walsh family who had the run on the Lachlan River?

I think it could be; The Michael who had the station on the Lachlan river 'Huaba" it was called, was the son of Michael and Mary Ann Walsh, he died December 1910 at Haberfield, Sydney. His wife's name was Mary and she died in March 1916.
The reason I say is because of all the names, Michael Jun. had sisters Eliza and Mary Ann. They were Catholics.
Between living on the Lachlan and Haberfield, the family lived for several years in Forbes.
Which makes me think Michael's mother Mary Ann may have died there.

The Mary Ann Walsh registered above died of Pneumonia 23 November 1907. She was a pioneer of the Forbes district.
I realize they are common names but I do think it's worth a look.

I will definitely check this out. It looks promising. My problem has been too many Mary Walsh deaths to work through. I have bought a few certificates over the years but none matched. There are a few references to the family during the 1850s and 1860s in the "Bathurst Free Press" - mostly in lists of names of people who've donated to the building fund for the cathedral but then the trail goes cold which makes sense if they moved to Forbes. I'll let you know how I go. Are you connected with this family? There were a couple of skeletons in the closet!

No I am not connected to the family.
Yes, they donated money in 1855/56 towards St. Michael's Catholic Church in Bathurst. Subscriptions were also published in the Freeman's Journal.

I have ordered transcripts of the deaths of both Michael in 1910 and Mary in 1907. I really think this might be the right family. Some of the names of Michael's children are the same as the names in my family. My fingers are crossed. Thanks so much for this information.
