James Howarth (1794-1884) was born in Lancashire, England, a son of James Howarth & Mary Ingram.
He first married Martha (surname unknown) and they had at least 2 children. When he was deported they were left behind in England.
James Howarth was convicted of a Felony on 11 Jan 1821 at York Assizes, West Riding. He was sentenced to 7 years Transportation. His crime was stealing six Handkerchiefs. He was previously imprisoned at Wakefield for three months. His goal report stated that he was well behaved. He was confined to a convict hulk for 11 months. It was stated that he was orderly. He eventually sailed from Portsmouth England on the 20 Dec 1821 on the Phoneix 1, with 182 convicts for Van Diemans Land.
The ship arrived on 20 May 1822 in Tasmania.
During his sentence he incurred 225 lashes - punishments were for the crimes of being drunk in devine service and defacing his irons. He served his full term becoming a free person on January 16, 1828.

James sought permission to marry Ann Cadd (1806-1852) in July 1829.
Mary Ann was born in England to George Cadd & Ruth Brown. She was transported on the Sir Charles Forbes in 1826/27 having been convicted of stealing clothes & money from her mistress. She was said to be 21 and had a lame left leg.
Because they were both convicts James & Mary Ann to wait for the permission to marry. When this was allowed they married in Penitentiary Chapel, Hobart on 18 Jan 1836
In the meantime James Howarth & Mary Ann Cadd had a daughter, Jane Howarth (1830-1859), who married Samuel Duck & had 6 children. They had a daughter, Mary Ann Howarth (1831-1908), who married Frederick Castle & had 15 children. They had a son, John James Howarth (1833-1891), who married Mary Ann O'Brien and had 9 children.
James & Mary Ann then married (in 1836) and had a further 5 children

Mary Ann died 25 Nov 1852 and is buried at EAS-COE-OLD-X-825-X Geelong Eastern Cemetery
