John Stead of Ludlow d. 1741

Journal by Steadier

John Stead was an apothecary or doctor of Physick and also something of a property speculator. I am looking for anything which will link him to the family of Samuel Stead (18th-19th century) who were builders in Ludlow.

Yes, I think it must be. I'm trying to trace his other children and grandchildren.
Thank you very much.

I now see that your John Stead must be the father of my John Stead. Yours married Anne Goodale and mine, his son, married Priscilla Pulley in 1682.

Correction: Priscilla may have been his sister.

John Stead the physician might be connected to the Stead family of Stone Masons - Builders - Architects. But there were a lot of Stead families in the Ludlow area.

Samuel - Matthew - William all called themselves Stone Masons, Marble Masons or just "Masons" and were active from the early 1800's. Samuel seems to have been the most involved in building and has left some good evidence of his work in the Ludlow town centre. At one stage he is described as "master mason employing 8 men".

His brother Matthew seems to have been regarded as an architect but may be confused with Matthew Stead "the younger" who always described himself as an architect and was responsible for the design of quite a few buildings in the area. He emigrated to St Johns New Brunswick about 1845 and continued his career there.

William was also a stone mason but may have worked for one or other of his brothers.

The father of these boys was another Matthew (presumably also a stone mason) who lived at Eye in Herefordshire and may have been involved in the construction of Berrington Hall in the late 1700's.

Whether the family originated in Ludlow and moved back there is moot.

Clarification - Matthew Stead "the younger" was the son of Matthew Stead and third in a line of Matthews.
