UPDATE ON PROGRESS ON MY "CHRONOLOGY OF BURIALS AT DROMANA, VIC., AUST., (FROM TROVE)" JOURNAL.

Journal by itellya

Having been unable to insert new information into the existing journal or break this journal into parts (pre 1900 etc.), I decided to copy the existing journal into a word document. This is now (12-4-2017) up to the end of stage 1 and consists of 379 pages. In the word document, the surnames index is placed at the start so that burial entries can be located quickly for anyone requesting information regarding a particular surname.

In stage 1, I have examined all 2000* results for DROMANA CEMETERY, (limited to Victoria)on trove. Not all results concerned burials at Dromana but some burials would have been missed by searching for "DROMANA CEMETERY" for which there were only 855 results.
*There are well over 8000 results but trove only shows 2000. As it would be far too time-consuming to search for any burials that might have been missed, I will move to stage 2.

Stage 2 will involve those on the ozgen list for Dromana Cemetery, for whom there is no burial entry yet, buried before the mid 1950's and those with known connections to pioneering families. Hopefully some genealogical and biographical detail can be provided for each of these.

As burial entries, except for those already in the journal, will not be available on family tree circles, send me (itellya)a private message detailing the surname for which you'd like the burial entries) and you'll have these within days. When I have completed the journal, or done as much as I'm humanly able to do, I will provide the file to the Dromana and District Historical Society and any computer literate member should be able to supply the burial entries. As most burial entries contain death and funeral notices, you should be able to work out which ones concern your family. Some entries contain information supplied by members of the HISTORY OF DROMANA TO PORTSEA Facebook group and by joining this group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/251032988414470/) you will be able to send a private message to members who possess extensive information not given by me.

Many of those for whom entries are written are not listed in www.ozgenonline.com/~vic_cem/dromana/dromanaaf_data.htm
and I have not written entries for many of those who are in the ozgen list because my focus was on writing about pioneers, their descendants (when known or discovered), long-time early residents and slightly later residents whose contribution to the district could be demonstrated.

RE THE PREVIOUS COMMENT. Talk about confusion. All I need to do before resuming my research (and adding to the surnames index in this journal) is transfer two burial entries from Part 3, as below, to the word document, namely:
16-1-1946. MRS. MARY ANN PEATEY (Nee McAuley.*)
PEATEY.— The Funeral of the late MARY ANN PEATEY will leave her residence, Point Nepean-road, Rosebud, at 2 p.m. THIS DAY. for the Dromana Cemetery.
The funerals of Mary Ann Peatey, and her husband John Henry Peatey on 24-10-1950, are not recorded on the ozgen list.
PEATEY. — At her residence, Point Nepean-road Rosebud, Mary Ann. loved
wife of John Henry Peatey. and loving mother of John (deceased), William (deceased), Susan, George, Annie, Mary, James (deceased), Charlotte (deceased). R.l.P. (Both P.7, The Age, 16-1-1946.)
* John Peatey - Historical records and family trees - MyHeritage
https://www.myheritage.com/names/john_peatey
John Edward Peatey was born on month day 1886, at birth place, to John Henry Peatey and Mary Anne Peatey (born McAuley).
John was born in April 1857, in South Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.
Mary was born in 1856, in Cushendall, Ireland.
John had 7 siblings: Anne Hounslow (born Peatey), Susan Dryden (born Peatey) and 5 other siblings.
John Henry Peatey was born in month 1857, at birth place, to George Edward Peatey and Susan Peatey (born Obery).
George was born on February 19 1832, in Wareham. England.
Susan was born in 1831.
From Rosalind Peatey's PINE TREES AND BOX THORNS.
George Peatey was born to Edward Peaty and Charlotte (nee Lane) and christened on 19-2-1832. The surname had a variety of spellings since its first appearance as Paty in 1580.
Rosalind (unless they were left out of my notes) did not give the maiden names of George's wife Susan, or John Henry's wife, Mary Ann, but they are supplied in the above genealogy.
Ith his wife, Susan, George Peatey, who was 7 feet i inch tall and had been a member of the Queen's Own Regiment, left London on 31-7-1855 and sailed on the Royal George which arrived on 27-11-1855. They must have gone immediately to Tarraville, Gippsland where Edward Norman was born before the end of the year.By April 1857, they were back in Melbourne where John Henry was born. ( Due to the influx of gold seekers, accommodation was both scarce and enormously expensive, so they were probably in CANVAS TOWN between the Yarra and Emerald Hill, now known as South Melbourne.)
By 1858, they were on Jamieson's Special Survey, between Dromana and Mt Martha where Maria (1859) and Charlotte (1861) were born. Alfred William's birthplace in 1871 was given as Kangerong which still meant the Survey as it was shortly after his birth that they moved to crown allotments 27A and 27C Kangerong, 100 acres at Melway 160K7 and 161A7 fronting Harrisons and Deep Creek Rds.
Edward Norman and John Henry moved to Gippsland (and it is likely that John met Mary there.) They married on 4-11-1884 and their first four children were born in Gippland: John Edward (20-11-1886), William Henry (22-11-1888), Susan (1890) and George (1892.)
By 1894, Jack and Mary's family had returned to Rosebud where the twins, Mary and Ann were born at "Beachside", crown allotment 5 of the Rosebud Fishing Village on the east side of Peateys Creek (the Murray Anderson Rd foreshore car park.)
Jack was almost an invalid and Fred Vine carved him a walking stick. Mary Ann almost single-handedly established a produce supply at "Beachside". Residents could buy goods from Melbourne sent down on the Evion or other small steamers at early stores run by Louis Anderson and Jack Jones but for milk, cream, eggs, butter, chickens and ducks, their shopping was done at "Beachside."
Between 1900 and 1920, the music for Rosebud's dances was provided by Jack's concertina, Rosie Bucher on the piano and a fiddler. Jack's father, George, died in 1904 aged 73 but Susan and Alf remained on lot 76 of crown allotment 17, the two acre block on the south corner of Jetty Rd and the subdivisional street now called McDowell St. However, when the house burnt down in 1912, they moved in with Jack and Mary Ann at "Beachside" where Susan died in October 1914, aged 83.
Jack's health eventually improved and he was able to take out fishing parties in Summer. Suddenly his eyes became crossed and Mr Wong, the market gardener from Chinaman's Creek performed a miracle cure. He made a mask with slits where Jack's eyes should focus. IT WORKED! Little did Rosalind Peatey realise that she (and probably all the womenfolk) were victims of a gigantic hoax, a practical joke. Jim Dryden spilt the beans!
Jack and Mary's daughter Susan, had married Bill Dryden, a champion footballer whose family had been early settlers near Hanging Rock. Unfortunately Bill was killed by the time his two sons, Bill (known as Boof by his later team mates at the Buds) and Jim (a Buds best and fairest) were ready to attend school. Bill's brother was playing for Seaford and may have had land on the Carrum Swamp. Bill had played for the early Rosebud teams but had been lured by Seaford to become its captain, perhaps because his brother was playing there and almost certainly because the 1930's depression was in full swing and he'd been offered a job at McDonald's sand pit at Seaford that became the club's present ground. Jim explained that he'd obtained a job at Tom Maw's sand pit at Rosebud but was killed when, in the process of getting out of the truck's tray, he placed his foot on a rear tyre- just as the truck reversed. Jim thought the accident happened on the morning of the footy grand final, which you'll see isn't true (unless the grand final or obituary was very late.) Jim was only about 6 at the time and was relying on what he'd been told. Mary Ann had no doubt told him about Tom Maw and how the accident happened but less reliable sources, probably Boof and Jim's later team mates, had embellished the story. Jim's grandfather, John Henry (Jack) Peatey had probably whispered the detail of the hoax to little Bill and Jim. The youngsters must have kept the secret well because Rosalind never found out the truth of the miracle cure. Here's Seaford's obituary for Jim's dad.
SEAFORD
OBITUARY .
Regret was expressed on the Peninsula, last Saturday when it was learned that Mr. W. Dryden had met his death by accident at Rosebud. The deceased was a well-known footballer around the district, having played with the Rosebud team a year or two ago, and last year captained the Seaford club. He had just recently left Seaford to accept employment at Rosebud. He leaves a widow and two young children. Deepest sympathy is extended to his parents, widow and children. Minnie Maud(e) Lovell, wife of Rev.Leon Lovell was buried at Dromana in 1954. As there was no obvious early or long connection with Dromana, I wasn't going to include her in the chronology but I'm glad that I did. What a story! Her father arrived in 1848 aged about 6 and married her mother in 1863. Her entry and others will be included in the surname index at the end of Oct., 2016.

If only I'd known that this website was available when I started the chronology! https://online.justice.vic.gov.au/bdm/indexsearch.doj

My latest burial entry is for Hugh Wyllie Crichton, who, I was able to prove with the data provided in births, deaths and marriages, was married twice. His first wife, Ellen, nee Shand, died at Warragul in 1909, their children having been born at Neerim and Buln Buln, both near Warrugul. Of course I had to be flexible with the spelling of the surname because it was recorded, as often as not, as Crighton. Ellen's given name was rendered as Helen. BDM data re the births of the children named in Helen's death notice proved that Helen was indeed Ellen. When I found mention of Mrs.H.W.Crichton living at Glenlee, Boneo in 1926, I knew it couldn't have been Ellen. Hugh Wyllie Crichton had married Eliza Cowlishaw in 1915.

This chronology is hard work but I have been inspired by my history buddies, Mrs Valerie Wilson O.A.M. (PIONEER GRAVES IN THE MORNINGTON CEMETERY)and Neil Hamilton Mansfield (BULLA CEMETERY and others)to provide biographies of those interred at Dromana, information for family historians that could never be found in gravestone inscriptions, the basis of most cemetery records.

An update of the surnames index will be provided shortly.
