Journal by Jackie5

I am looking for information regarding Catherine Humpheries born Prendergast in Ireland 1878. Catherine left Ireland after the 1901 census. Catherine died in Sydney Australia in 1971. I am unable to find when she married or arrived in Australia. Catherine husband ? Humpheries died before her and they also divorced or seperated some time before she died. Does any one have any information related to either of these people.

do you know her husbands christian name?

by Jackie5 on 2016-10-17 16:04:49

no, Sorry I don't. I have very little information to go on. She was my Great, Great, Great, Aunt the youngest of 10 children. I have been told that she was in Australia when the harbour bridge was open. But, I can't find any information about her time here. I met Catherine when I was 5 years old and she was 98 year. And I do remember when she died. As you can see I have little to go on.

Catherine was born in Ireland approx 1873. In the Co of Roscommmon Kilullagh Castlerea and grew up in Pollanality. At the time of the 1901 cencsus Catherine would have been 23y. She was the youngest of approx. 9 children, her brother Richard is my Great Great Grandfather. He stayed on the farm and direct relatives are still there today. Her siblings are Richard 1857, Pat 1854 - married, Bridget 1862- became a servant on the Fitzmaurice farm, Mary Anne 1865 - no details, Peter 1867 - no details, Ellen 1869- married in America 1893, Luke 1878 - went to england, Catherine 1878 - Australia ,James 1858 - no detail. Most of the information came to me from my Grandmother who has died who also lived on the family farm.

Catherine died 11 Aug 1971 and is buried in Rookwood. The rest is not hearsay as it has come to me from my father and he is not to sure of the details.

Catherine may have arrived as early as 1912 on the Britian, I have not confirmed this. Her Husband is believed to be buried in North Sydney and died many years before. "John" may be his name but I can't confirm this. He was also believed to be a gambler and gambled all their assets away. Catherine was not able to read or right. She was to have owned a home in Burke or Reily Street Sydney/ Paddington. After her husband tricked her into signing papers to borrow money against the home, she was to have gone to court to win the right to stay in the house.
This all I have. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi, did your aunt have any children? did you see her in Australia if so was your parents there also? another thought was did she go to america first to her sister then to Australia? why Australia? why didn't she go to America as her sister was already there? seems a brave thing to do to go half way round the world on her own, maybe she was sponsored by someone. Oh so many unanswered questions.

Hi, No there were no children and yes I did see her in Australia. I was 6 and she 98. I came to Australia when I was 1. in 1966. I have asked if Catherine went to america but, no one was able to confirm that. Her sister Ellen was in America, married with 3 children. We don't know what happened to Ellen or where she is buried. And yes, it would have been brave of her to come straight to Australia. There is one mention of a Catherine Prendergast in Ellis Island. Arriving 17 Aug 1907. I have not confirmed this to be her. That is why I was going the Humphreys angle.

Hello, I think we are related: Your GGGGfather Francis "Frank" Prendergast is very likely the brother to my GGGrandmother Anne Prendergast, who married Luke Waldron. They lived in Cloonfad. Luke Waldron was a farmer and a National School Teacher and School Master.

Their nine children were:
Bridget Waldron, b.1854
Eleanor or Helen Waldron, b.1857;
Sabina Rose Waldron, b. 1859; married William Gilmore;
Richard Joseph Waldron, b.1861; (My GGfather); imm to New York; married 3 times; only daughter Virginia (my Gmother);
Mary Anne Waldron, b.1864; married (?) Richard Prendergast, b. 1856?
Thomas Alfred Waldron, b. 1866; md Delia/Bedelia Conway;
Patrick Waldron, b.1869;
Catherine Waldron, b.1871;
Margaret Waldron, b. 1874.

I have very little information about them. My Grandmother, Virginia Waldron visited her Irish cousins in Polredmond and Ballymoe in the early 1920s. She married William Francis "Frank" Brainerd in New York City, and they later moved to Texas, where my father was born.

I would love to share any information you have on the Prendergast and Waldron family, please. Many thanks,
