It has been family folk lore in the John Jackson Kirkland Sr - Benjamin William Kirkland -Andrew K Kirkland - James Kirkland line that the father of the originator of the family, Nathan Kirkland was half Cherokee. His father was an army office, either British or Colonal, at the time before the French-Indian war of 1754. This person had a child with a Cherokee woman. This child was raised as Cherokee and given his father's sirname, Kirkland.
According to Elroy Christenson of the Elroy Christenson Family History - C0l. Moses Kirkland, http://www.next1000.com/family/EC/kirkland.moses.html ,there is a sentence that says "He (Col. Moses Kirkland) and his family had been important settlers of the South Carolina backcountry on the fringe border of Cherokee indian territory. One of the Kirkland family is said to have even married an indian woman." This matches our family oral tradition very closely. I believe the word "married" was used loosely and should be "had and affair"
There are other stories that Nathan Kirkland was a Cherokee named Cheesquire who lived at the same time and place. But, I have ruled this out thru available census
There is another story that Nathan's father was a Scotch tailor named John Kirkland, drawn to Fort Laudon on the Little Tennessee River by the British as they tried to settle the area during the French-Indian war.
John, married an indian girl. When the Cherokee forced the British to abondon Ft. Loudon, John stayed with his wife and child. I have not been able to find any proof of this story.
I have not been able to find any proof of the mother of all the children born that gave rise to all the living Kirklands of today. She is said to be Lilly Berry Faw or Phaw, but not records.
DNA for my wife (this is her family) shows that she is .65% American Indian
Surnames: NONE
