Journal by cricket8520

Is there such thing as free access to censuses? I dont have the extra cash to spend on membership sites. Is there a way to see a census without paying?

Dear Cricket, Hi. Q.Where are you from? What countries do you wish to access Census data for?

by cricket8520 on 2006-07-10 23:26:24

Hey Alley. Im from South Carolina,US. But I need access to census from Vermont, New York and Canada. I'd greatly appeciate any help you can provide.

by allycat on 2006-07-10 23:33:52

Cricket, I think if you send a personal message to bcagle on here she might be able to help.

I'm an expert on Australia, NZ and pacifica, and pretty good at England.

Also do a search on CANADA / CANADIAN as there are several journals written. I found a free site on the 1911 Candadian Census.

Keep asking questions ... and post those journals. The more info you include, the more luck you will have.

Thank you very much. Any info is a help. Like I said, I'm very new to this so its still confusing to me how to sort all the possible leads. Especially when I believe the surname spelling has been changed several times.
Again, thanks for your time and the information.

I have seen many different surname spellings as well to some of the ones in my family tree, and it makes you check everywhere.

Hopefully you will try the surnamenavigator search engine that I replied to you about in an earlier posted journal.

And don't forget about the LDS Familysearch.org website. Although not 100% correct, it's an excellent tool.

Do a search on journals NEWBIES and FREE on here as well. Start at the beginning and work backwards is the simplest advice I can give, and to also document all your sources from everything to a) Source: Family Bible; b) Great Aunty whatshername c) bdm certs etc.etc.

lol, I will be trying anything and everything. any web site I find that does a search I'm using, as well as genealogy forums in the vermont area.

Only NARABONE's showing up are my own immediate family back to my grandfather(FRED) after that nothing so far, but it early in my search so I will forge ahead. I wished I still lived in Vermont this would be much simpler. Being 1800 miles from where everything I need is puts a damper on things.

Thanks for all the help, starting tomorrow I will make use of the tips you mentioned.

You should try living in Australia!

Can you give me a hint what the surname NARABONE and variations actually means and/or origins? Any favourite websites that you've come across?

And please do help other genealogists by updating your profile, and adding all your favourite websites to share with others.

I actually have no idea what the surname means. Kinda embarrassed I've never asked before. All I know is that our ancestors are supposed to come from a small town in the south of France. Which I found is spelled NARBONNE,another reason to believe the name has under gone several spelling changes. Then went to Lacolle,Canada then into Vermont. I did a little rading about Lacolle and there is pretty good possibilty they did come thru there.
I remember my older aunts talking about thier grandparents barely being able to speak english, mostly speaking French.

So thats what I know in a nutshell. The only NARABONE's I have actually ever met were my own family. My older brother is the last male in our line, thats one of the reasons I wanted to do this. Our grandfather died with a few months of my brothers birth and we know nothing of his family.

I really havent found any favorite sites yet, and none that have been very helpful. US Death records I've been able to access have only been of my immediate family and back to the before mentioned grandfather. So no help there.

But when I do find one they may be helpful to others I will be sure post it.

Dear Cricket, Hi there. Just from a little bit of looking around on the internet and creating the surname wiki page for NARABONE I've come to the conclusion that the surname was DE NARABONNE or something like that with origins in France.

Hopefully you will have some joy from those webpages I've found.

Cheerio, Al from the great southernland downunder.

by cricket8520 on 2006-07-14 19:59:26

Hey Al. Thats what my understanding is too, and have always heard our surname was from the town oF NARBONNE in the south of France. So that all fits, its just finding the right links to who changed it, when and how are they related, lol. And I thought it was going to be simple! Foolish me!! Oh, well gives me something to do in my spare time. :)

I've been posting on forums with similar spellings of the surname hoping to come across some pertinant info, and also in forums in the New England area. Hopefully I will come across someone who knows something.

I really appreciate all the time and effort you've put into helping me on my search. The links have been much used be me,lol.

Thanks again... hope your having a nice weekend!
Dawn.

Dear Dawn, Hi there. Just added a few more bits to the NARABONE wiki page. Oh another tip: always post a message and/or goto the country forum of the surname you are researching - France at the genforums - France Genealogy Forum.

Make sure you have an email address that you will use for a long time as once messages are posted at the genforums, they stay there indefinitely.

Bye now, Al.

Dawn, it also looks like there was an aide-de-camp to Napoleon by the name of Count Narbonne! Just google sometime and you will find lots of info.

Al.

by deanbat on 2006-08-01 15:50:23

I know that you can access your local census for free at your library. I believe most genealogy rooms in public libraries also offer free access to ancestory.com.

by cricket8520 on 2006-08-01 21:01:25

Thanks Dean, but lol, thats one of my problems. Location, I'm in South Carolina and my ancestors/records are in Vermont,New York and Canada.

I need to write a journal, I have some new info to add but I havent had time to do so yet. Hope to do it soon.

by deanbat on 2006-08-02 01:19:47

I can go to public library and access ancestory.com for free which helps me with VA and NY research for free. I am in NC. Ask your librarian, it couldn't hurt.

by cricket8520 on 2006-08-05 22:48:42
