JAMES GRAY OF PORTLAND, MACARTHUR, WARRNAMBOOL AND DROMANA 1859-1951 (VIC., AUST.)

Journal by itellya

JAMES WAS BURIED AT DROMANA CEMETERY. ENTRY FROM MY CHRONOLOGY OF BURIALS AT DROMANA.

4+-10-1951. JAMES GRAY, DROMANA.
GRAY. — On October 4, at Dromana, James, beloved husband of the late Alice Gray, loving father of Alice (Mrs. Hallowell). Ruth (Mrs. Mehegan). Katie and Wallace; aged 93 years. Formerly of Macarthur and Warrnambool. Victoria.(P.2, The Age, 6-10-1951.)
The age was digitised as 98 years but close examination of the page revealed that it was actually 93 as on the “marble on granite” gravestone at Dromana cemetery shown on the ozgen list.
There was no funeral notice.

The death record gave his age as 92, perhaps a typo.

I suspected that the maiden name of the late wife of James was Neild and their daughter Alice’s death record did not provide her mother’s maiden name so I tried Ruth’s which confirmed my suspicion. Interestingly Ruth, born at Warrnambool, died at Dromana. Her sister Alice Hallowell (who, like her father, died at the age of 93) had probably married near her death place of Warrnambool.

Ruth’s name is not on the ozgen list for Dromana but I wonder if she was buried with her father.

James and Alice were married in 1885.

A trove search revealed the Hallowell family as early and long-time Warrnambool residents and the NIELDS ditto at Macarthur.

Itellya is researching local history on the Mornington Peninsula and is willing to help family historians with information about the area between Somerville and Blairgowrie. He has extensive information about Henry Gomm of Somerville, Joseph Porta (Victoria's first bellows manufacturer) and Captain Adams of Rosebud.
