Francis McGovern was born in Ireland,and joined the Irish Constabulary in 1854.He served 9 years.
The Irish Constabulary in those days was looked upon as one of the best forces in the world.
Francis arrived in NZ September the 1st 1863.
In 1864 he went to Auckland to join their police force.
McGovern was the first Constable to be posted to the Hamilton area,which was just being laid out.
For the first 3 months he could find no bed or lodgings,an so was forced to sleep in the blacksmiths shop.
Francis was stationed in various towns throughout the years,and eventually worked his way up to Inspector.
Francis McGovern married Bridget Canny a young lass from Ballinalacken County Clare,November 26 1872 in the Roman Catholic Chapel in Hamilton Waikato.
They had 2 children.
Kate who died 14 October 1873, age 3 weeks.and
Frank Dalton McGovern born 1875, died 17 September 1937 age 62
Frank married Margaret Florence Bonnington in 1902.
Frank was highly respected in banking and Commercial circles in NZ.

Inspector McGovern died in Auckland 23 April 1925 age 92.

Bridget died in Auckland 11 September 1939 age 90.

Both were buried in the Hamilton West Cemetery.
As Frank and Margaret had no children ,That was the end of the line for the family
