Depends on the country and how far back you want to go.

I'm sure someone can help you so why not include a few more details about the name, and how far back you have gone before the name changed.

Hello Tonkin,

Thank you for your response. In 1840 in Pennsylvania the name was JAMES A. THOMPSON. I was told that somewhere before that time the surname may have been spelled differently or completely different. I will see what the census may show. Any information will be very appreciated.
