Notes for CHARLES BRANTLEY HOLLEY:
Levi George and his sons, Jesse, Riley, and John Allen, and his daughter and son-in-law, Harriet Rebekah and Charles Brantley Holley, decided to leave Aiken Co., South Carolina and move to Texas. They traveled in covered wagons. Before they had gone very far, Jesse decided he wanted to return to Aiken. They had a family conference and he decided to come on with them if they would come to south Georgia. They came to Early County (New Hope), but Jesse only stayed a year before going back to Aiken. The date they came to Early County is unknown, but is probably between 1850 and 1853 as John Allen and Epsy Jane Dubose were married in Early County on September September 15. 1953 (1853). (This is probably correct since they are all still on the 1850 census for Barnwell County, SC and Harriet and Brantley Holley's first child was born in Early County on March 3, 1853.) (Ref. Jackie Miller, 6569 Wanda Lane, Houston, TX 77074, 1999).
Charles Brantley Holley was killed at the Battle of Chancellorsville while serving as a 2nd Lieutenant with with Co. A, 51st Regiment Georgia Infantry during the Civil War. We cannot find his grave. The government authorities have been no help at all. We can only conclude that he was buried in a mass grave with others. His youngest child was only 10 months old when his father was killed. I think the family had rather a hard time after the war. Family tradition is that "Rebekah" had to sell Charles sword because she needed money. There was a thread mill at Blakley, GA at the time (They called it the "cotton factory") and all of the children that was old enough, worked at the cotton factory to help support the family.

General Partion Information:
Maria Glover Holly seeks "maintenance and alimony" from her estranged husband. Maria intermarried with Joshua Holly in 1827, and the couple lived peacefully until 1843, when he "contracted an alliance" with Elizabeth Sharp, with whom he now lives "in a state of open fornication and unlawful concubinage." Joshua abandoned Maria and their common dwelling some seven years ago, but he continued to visit her and their nine children until about 1852. During his visits, Joshua threatened his family "by throwing his open knife at his children" and abusing his wife "with whips, or fists, or sticks." Upon abandoning their home, Joshua took with him his horses, cattle, and "all his grown negroes," leaving Maria "four young negroes," the eldest of whom he has since taken away. The remaining slaves are "too young and small to afford any substantial aid," and Maria has struggled to maintain her large family. In addition, her husband has cautioned "any person against crediting your Oratrix and also orally forbade it." Asserting that Joshua is in possession of substantial land and at least twelve slaves in the state, Maria prays that her husband "may be restrained from going without or beyond the limits of this State without leave of your Honors and that your Honors would award and decree to your Oratrix a competent and separate maintenance and alimony out of the estate of her husband the said Joshua"
