FRUSTRATION: THE CHATFIELDS OF ROSEBUD WEST, VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA.
FRUSTRATION! (From my PIONEERS OF THE MORNINGTON PENINSULA Facebook post.)
As I had very little hope, based on no response from true locals in the past, that any useful information about the Chatfield family, pioneers of Rosebud West by 1919, would be forthcoming on the other page, I decided to write a journal on family tree circles but my 567th journal is UNDER REVIEW while stupid comments from Russians etc.slip through unnoticed. These usually get deleted but here's one example.

WILLIAM THOMAS CHATFIELD AND HIS FAMILY, PIONEERS BY 1926 OF ROSEBUD WEST, VIC., AUST. WHEN LOCALS CALLED THE AREA EASTBOURNE.
PENDING REVIEW
William Chatfield, William Trueman, David Cairns and Co. would have laughed if anybody at the 1926 meeting had suggested that the area between Rosebud and Rye should be called Capel Sound. I refuse to call the area Capel Sound (now the official name of the suburb) lest people think I'm talking about the deep water anchorage stretching from the Sorrento and Rye channels near Blairgowrie to Mount Martha Point and about a mile offshore from Rosebud West. At least the people who proposed the stupid new name didn't want to change the names of Eastbourne Road and Eastbourne Primary School. "Eastbourne" on the south side of Eastbourne Rd between house blocks on the west side of Balaka St and Elizabeth Avenue, largely occupied today by the Village Glen, was only 1000 links (200 metres) from the beach at its north west corner.
On the beach side of Eastbourne Rd directly opposite "Eastbourne" was crown allotment 53 Wannaeue granted to lime merchant, William Allison Blair. He became insolvent and moved from Melway 28 J4 to a farm on the site of the Medway Golf Course (27 F9.) Blair's grants between Elizabeth Avenue and Truemans Rd were bought by the Zichy-Woinarski family which built the heritage-listed Woyna House at 9-11 Terry St and operated the 419 acres as a dairy farm. The land was later subdivided as the Woyna Estate.
Crown allotment 53 was sold in allotments, probably by Blair's assignee. "Two of these parcels were purchased and consolidated in 1923-4 by Mrs Alice Fielding (who is believed to have been a descendant of William Blair) and in 1941 she subdivided the land as it is today."
"Fielding Rd became (a rat run to avoid the congestion that still exists today, so) Fielding Rd was closed at the Eastbourne Rd end, gazetted on 2-11-1983, and the Woodthorpe Bushland Reserve there was gazetted in 2003."
(P. 192-4, STORIES OF ROSEBUD WEST, Bettyanne Foster, November 2016.)
Also on C/A 53, east of the Woodthorpe Estate to Chinamans Creek, are Chatfield Avenue and Capel Avenue. The latter was named by James Sloss whose name does not appear in the index of Bettyanne's book but he is discussed under Leisureland on pages 33-4. In the 1950's Leisureland was subdivided with Capel Avenue providing access to the blocks. Sloss provided land for the bowling club so it is fitting that when it was relocated to the Vern Wright Reserve, a green was named in his honour. After retiring as operator of Leisureland, James Sloss continued to run the post office at Rosebud West, which according to page 55 of Bettyanne's book was today's SOUND BAR (formerly the Capel Sound.) N.B.AS POINTED OUT BY BETTYANNE, PETER WILSON'S "ON THE ROAD TO ROSEBUD" HAS EXTENSIVE INFORMATION ABOUT JAMES SLOSS AND LEISURELAND. I BELIEVE THAT PETER RAN THE POST OFFICE FOR SLOSS.
The following was written by me yesterday as a post on the HISTORY OF DROMANA TO PORTSEA Facebook group page.
A HOLE IN ROSEBUD WEST'S HISTORY: THE CHATFIELDS.
Lime , Land, Leisure* states that Chatfield of Rosebud West was one of the earlyish fishermen and may have stated that his fishing right and cottage on the foreshore was taken over by (a Swede named Alex Vincent?) Vin Burnham mentioned Alex in one of his anecdotes but couldn't remember his surname. I can think of nobody else but C.N.Hollinshed who would have supplied the surname and I think that Vin (Owen) must have mentioned his place of origin.
*POSTSCRIPT. A CHECK ONLINE OF DON JORDAN'S INDEX FOR "LIME LAND LEISURE" REVEALS NO MENTION OF WILLIAM CHATFIELD. IT WAS PETER WILSON WHO MENTIONED WILLIAM CHATFIELD ON PAGE 40 OF "ON THE ROAD TO ROSEBUD" AND AXEL VINCENT ON PAGE 42. PETER SAID THAT CHATFIELD WAS A FISHERMAN AT "WEST ROSEBUD" AND AS HE RAN THE ROSEBUD WEST NEWSAGENCY AT SOME STAGE, THIS INFORMATION MAY HAVE COME DIRECTLY FROM WILLIAM CHATFIELD WHO DIED THERE IN 1961, OR STELLA CHATFIELD WHO WAS STILL LIVING THERE IN THE 1970'S. PETER'S WIDOW, LOIS, IS A GRAND DAUGHTER OF WALTER BURNHAM WHO WAS PROBABLY THE NEAREST FISHERMAN TO WILLIAM CHATFIELD. HIS COTTAGE ON THE FORESHORE NEAR BONEO RD. BEING ONLY 50 CHAINS (1 KM) EAST OF CHINAMANS CREEK.
I had never mentioned Chatfield to Bettyanne Foster so it is not surprising that there is no mention of the Chatfields in her STORIES OF ROSEBUD WEST.
I must have mentioned something about Chatfield having been a fisherman at Rosebud West on this page soon after I joined the group and this was disputed by a member who remembered him as a storekeeper and stated that he built the tattoo parlour which is on the same block of land as the house shown in the photo posted on 28-1-2017 by Bruce Jones (and now back to the top of the page due to comments.)
Mr Chatfield was most likely William Chatfield and he could well have been a fisherman in his younger days before the aforesaid member moved to Rosebud West. While Bettyanne Foster had much detail about the Woodthorpe Estate and James Sloss of Leisureland, very little has been published about the Chatfields so hopefully some of the true locals can provide some information.
Here's a start.
CHATFIELD, Nellie Phoebe. -On June 29, at her residence,Chatfield avenue, West Rosebud, beloved wife of William, and loving mother of Stella, aged 71 years.
(P.11, Argus, 30-6-1953.)
This could well be the house shown in Bruce's photo but it could also be the Chatfield residence in Chatfield Avenue. Was William moving away to live with his daughter, Stella?
Stella was still at Rosebud West in 1950 if she was the S.Chatfield listed in the 1950 directory and no marriage notice has been found for her.
TO LET. — Furnished, accom. 7, close beach, West Rosebud, sew.,,H.W.S. Vacant from Jan. 9. Chatfield. West Rosebud.(P.54, The Age, 5-12-1953.)
And that's all that Trove has for "Chatfield, West Rosebud."
It came as a shock to find that Rosebud West was known by that name BEFORE it was referred to as West Rosebud!
HOUSE to Let, furn.,, accom. 9 persons. Chatfield, Rosebud West. (P.10, The Age, 3-2-1940.)
LOST Friday bet St Kilda Rosebud Black Pom answers Ponto Reward Chatfield, Rosebud West. (P.10, Argus, 16-10-1940.)
It came as no surprise that when William Chatfield and other pioneers of the area between Rosebud and Rye had to come up with a name for that area in 1926 they did a lot better than to name it after a deep water anchorage at least a mile away in the Bay and extending from Blairgowrie to Mt. Martha Point (Capel Sound).
As I'd run out of results for the Chatfields, there being no death notice re William and only a suspicion that his daughter, Stella, was named after a Mrs H.Chatfield of St Kilda whose maiden name was GIACOMETTI), the naming of Eastbourne in 1926 remained my only hope of finding more information about the Chatfields.
At a public meeting held at Eastbourne a committee of management, consisting of Messrs D Cairns, W. Chatfield, F Luscombe, and W.Truman, was formed to take over control of portion of the foreshore between Rye and Rosebud. It was decided to name the locality Eastbourne.(P.15, Argus, 23-6-1926.)
The Sands and McDougall directory of 1950 lists W.T. and S. Chatfield as storekeepers of Rosebud West.
Victorian BDM is still offline for maintenance but I've managed to find a few details.

Useful comments posted so far.
Mal Boag No Chatfields enrolled at Rosebud State School between 1884-1970. Presumably any children attended Rye.
ME. Thanks Mal Boag. The first documentary evidence of William Thomas Chatfield being at Rosebud West was in 1926 and he had probably been there for a few years. However, Stella, apparently his only child, was born in 1901 so her education was probably well in the past before the family's arrival in the area. William's wife was buried at Rye but there is no record of it on
ADD TO JOURNAL WHEN AND IF POSSIBLE.
The earliest previous documentation of William Chatfield being at Rosebud West was the 1926 meeting. It now seems that he had moved from the Balaclava electorate to the Flinders electorate between 1917 and 1919.

*The gravestone quaintly describes him as a veteran of the Boar War (AND THE 1914-18 WAR.). He must have been very young when he was fighting the PIGS unless his age at embarkation (20) is wrong. The grave photo is wrong! The deceased* was just plain Walter who must have been born in about 1882 as he died in 1943 aged 61. There is no record of his W.W, 1 service in the A.I.F. PROJECT.
* WALTER CHATFIELD, Late of Corowa, New South Wales, Laborer, Deceased, Intestate.-After 14 days Public Trustee, duly authorised by Florence Mary Ann Chatfield, widow of the deceased. As Louisa Mary and William Thomas Chatfield* were both born at Tungamah, it is extremely likely that the Rosebud West pioneer of circa 1919 was the William listed as one of the children of George and Hannah of 5 Inkerman Grove St Kilda in Hannah's death notice above.

William Thomas Chatfield was also probably the W. Chatfield who was a prominent member of the St Kilda Angling Club, winning many of its competitions in the years before his move to Rosebud West. This makes it likely that he did indeed turn "Pro", and obtain a fishing right near Chinamans Creek. I had trouble locating results for "St Kilda Angling Club, Chatfield" which I'd read last night and this uncorrected report will explain why.

CHATFIELD AVENUE.
When was this Rosebud West street first mentioned? Who had subdivided the land and what was the name of the estate?
Chatfield Avenue was mentioned in Nellie's death notice in 1953 so that parcel of c/a 53 had obviously been subdivided by then. Another resident of Chatfield Avenue in 1953 was Vic Guy who wanted to buy a 1937-8 Willy's sedan or ute (P.37, The Age, 14-2-1953.) He obviously liked fishing but in 1955 he was trying to sell a dingy and mooring. (P. 46, Argus, 3-12-1955.)
A search for Chatfield Av. or Avenue produced no new information (with a suburb name). "Chatfield Avenue" alone produced 96 results, all but one being about the Balwyn street.
PRAHRAN HODGES was most likely the name of a real estate agency (or agent) which had snapped up blocks in three different estates near the beach south of the government road NOW called Eastbourne Road.
Ocean St was on c/a 17 Wannaeue between Jetty Rd and the line of Norm Clark Walk, first subdivided in the latish 1870's by R.R.Woolcott with W.F.Vale taking over his efforts in 1913.*
(*See under Rosebud in column https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/196245254)
Arthur Alfred Thomas had bought "Hindhope" from Eleanor Rigg at 2:21 p.m. on 23-10-1914. This roughly 57 acre farm fronted Pt Nepean Rd from First Avenue to Boneo Rd and extended south to include Hindhope Villa (50 First Avenue, RECENTLY DEMOLISHED BECAUSE OF INADEQUATE HERITAGE STUDIES) and Hope St house blocks. The first street in the subdivision was supposed to be named after the last to farm Hindhope (on a one year lease), a member of the famed Frankston pioneering McCOMB family but the surveyor labelled it McCombe St on the plan of Block A. Thomas St was named after the developer.

WAS IT WILLIAM THOMAS CHATFIELD WHO SUGGESTED EASTBOURNE AS THE NAME FOR THE LOCALITY BETWEEN ROSEBUD AND RYE IN 1926?
A trove search for "ESTATE, ROSEBUD" in the 1920's failed to reveal how Chatfield Avenue at Rosebud West acquired its name by 1928. I was about to try "chatfield, rosebud" in the same decade when an impulse led to me substituting Eastbourne for Rosebud. William seemed to be keen to see Eastbourne established as the locality's name so perhaps it was his suggestion in the first place. Dromana was a well-known place and, in advertisements for estates and holiday accommodation, was usually tacked onto Rosebud with which most Melbourne residents would not have been acquainted.
To Let, Furn, House, accom. 9, on main road, vacant Xmas onwards. W. Chatfield,Eastbourne, Dromana.
(P.20, The Age, 4-12-1929.)
Chatfield Avenue was obviously a subdivisional street (at least on paper!) by Easter 1927. The three roomed villa may have been William Chatfield's original dwelling, but perhaps not*. It was to be sold on the 18th, Easter Monday.
KNIGHT and HARWOOD..-Cor. Pt. Nepean road and Chatfield street, Rosebud, 3- Villa.(P.2, Argus, 16-4-1927.)
*It is starting to look likely that William Chatfield had purchased one or more portions of c/a 53, which like the Woodthorpe Estate, stretched from Pt Nepean Rd to Eastbourne Rd,and that he had lodged the subdivision plan himself and was building houses on beachfront lots which were most likely to sell quickly. This was quite a deep block.
ROSEBUD. — For Sale, House, 6 r., land 50 x 250 ft. on Nepean-rd.; £450, cash or terms. W. Chatfield.

PRAHRAN HODGES, 367 Chapel st., South Yarra.(P.2, Argus, 19-12-1928.)
A Lands Department clerk has obviously made an error regarding the crown allotment number. No copies of the Wannaeue parish map show crown allotment 50 section A (part of the former Tootgarook run; section B having been the Arthurs Seat Run.) The boundary between c/a 13 and 53 was just east of the Boneo drain and David Cairns must have purchased the part of c/a 53 between Mirram Ave. and Chinamans Creek, leased, and later sold to, the Wong family, from the Blair Estate or assignee. Chatfield Avenue, Leisureland (Capel Avenue) and the Woodthorpe Estate were all on c/a 53 which went west to Elizabeth Avenue. Eastbourne, across Eastbourne Rd, consisted of c/a's 52 and 44, the Woyna Estate between Elizabeth Ave. and Truemans Rd was on c/a's 51, 49 and 45 and the Stenniken, Truemans and Rowley grants across Truemans Rd were on c/a's 48, 47 and 46, 46A.
The Mortgagee of lot 3 was most likely William Thomas Chatfield and the memorial (v.5028 f.1005549) should detail the transfer of the land from the developer to the purchaser, a sketch of title tracing the land back to c/a 53 being granted to Blair, transferred to an assignee, sold in portions such as that containing Chatfield Avenue, transfer of this part (To Chatfield?), sale of lot 3 to the unknown purchaser, this block being mortgaged to the seller (or a financial body) etc. There may also be plans showing the Chatfield Avenue portion on c/a 53 and lot 3 on this portion coloured red.
With the title details given, the above information mentioned can be provided at a cost.

Itellya is researching local history on the Mornington Peninsula and is willing to help family historians with information about the area between Somerville and Blairgowrie. He has extensive information about Henry Gomm of Somerville, Joseph Porta (Victoria's first bellows manufacturer) and Captain Adams of Rosebud.
