Maxted

Journal by Kari57

I am researching the Maxted line of my tree at present. William Kirk married Margaret Harriet Maxted on June 13 1917 in Presbyterian church, Gore Southland, New Zealand. Margaret's mother was Elizabeth Lampert married Richard Maxted circa 1887. There is a gap here. I think she died only a few years after and he remarried but can't make the connection.

hi Kari,
Not quite sure I have worked out what you mean by 'the gap'.
Are you talking about William Kirk? or Richard Maxted?
When you say SHE died? and he remarried?

Do you mean Elizabeth Maxted (nee Lampert) died?
She was born in 1869 in Winton, married Richard 10 Jan 1887 when she was 18 and died 21 Nov 1894 when she was 25.
She was a suffragette who unfortunately, never got to use her vote which was passed in 1893.

As far as I can tell Richard & Elizabeth had 3 children before she died (possibly in childbirth)..
1888 - Margaret Harriet Maxted
1891 - Edward Maxted
1894 - Harriet Maxted
Is this what you have too?

Elizabeth is buried in Winton and Richard is buried in Pukerau with his parents (in 1919). Thinking, if he had remarried he would probably be buried with Elizabeth or his 2nd wife?

His death notice in the paper only says.. beloved eldest son of Edward & Harriet. No wife mentioned

Richard was 1 of about 13 children of Edward Maxted (1834-1910) & Harriet Stokes (1837-1914) from Dover, Kent.
He died 30 Jan 1919 at Eccles St., Gore, after a lingering illness. Not sure if this was his home. It was possibly that of his sister Rose.

He owned 527 acres of freehold farm land in Pukerau. He had been leasing it from his brothers up until the previous year, June 1918. In Sep 1920 the Trustees of his Estate instructed the Southland Farmers Co-op to sell the land by public auction.
This does not sound like a second wife to me unless she predeceased him.

Sorry could have been a bit clearer... but yes you got the gist. Yes my gap or question is Was Richard married a second time after his first wife died. I can't seem to find any information around this area. Thankyou for all your information.

No Kari, I don't believe Richard did remarry.
Read his timeline here, Richard Maxted & Elizabeth Lampert, Pukeraru

I wonder who helped bring up his children though after Elizabeth's early death (not at childbirth as it turns out). Probably his or her parents OR his sister Rose. She was 16-17 at the time. She never married. She adored her brother Richard - read her Memoriam for him in 1920
