Hewitt Kells of Kensington was the son of Hewitt Kells, a pioneer of Cowie's Creek (south west of the township of Lara) near Geelong in the 1870's (perhaps as early as 1866 when William Jnr seems to have been born), one of the many pioneering farmers who made ends meet by carrying out road maintenance contracts, in his case for Corio Shire, as below.

Tenders were-opened for contract 223,
for stone clearing, pitching crossings, and
metalling portions of Sandy Creek road,
You Yangs. Three tenders were received
as follows:- Wilson Dover, £100 19s;
Kirk and Son, £98 4s; Hewitt Kells, £97

By 1878, William Snr had a move in mind but not downward forcefully and painfully like this.
On Wednesday night a man named Hewitt
Kells, whilst out riding at Cowie's Creek,
was thrown from his horse. His face was
much cut and his leg injured. He was at-
tended to at the Hospital.(P.2, Geelong Advertiser, 5-4-1878.)

William Snr obviously had at least two** children (William Jnr and Isabella) born near Geelong before the move to this selection which was probably at Tungamah.

Hewitt Jnr was a fit member of the Tungamah fire brigade by 1890.

Mrs Isabella, wife of Mr Alexander
M'Nicholson, butcher, died at her
residence,. Baddaginnie, on the 31st
ult., the cause of death being trouble
of the heart; Deceased was a daugh-
ter of the late, Mr Hewitt Kells*, a
pioneer of the Yarrawonga district
who settled on the land in that quarter
nearly half a century ago, and was
widely known and deservedly esteemed
for the excellence of her qualities, She
was the mother of a family of eight
sons and daughters and was a native
of Geelong. Much sympathy is felt for
Mr M'Nicholson and family over their

*The name,HEWITT, must have had a lot of significance in the Kells family's ancestry because Isabella's father (whom I've called Hewitt Snr)was the son of yet another Hewitt Kells.

Hewitt Snr had married Catherine Power in 1862 (reg. no.1180/ 1862.)
There was no marriage notice.

Kells—On the 10th June, at her father's resi-

years and three months, fourth daughter of
Hewitt and Catherine Kells.
The funeral will move This Day, at 12.30 p.m., |
for the New General Cemetery.

To prevent any false assumption that Hewitt Jnr died at today's Leopold* near Geelong, I'll specify his place of death as Kensington, NEAR FLEMINGTON, as the G.P.O. advised in 1876**.

The area was formerly known as Kensington. The post office opened as Kensington on 19 May 1858, and was renamed Kensington Hill in 1882, Leopold Hill in 1884 and Leopold in 1885.[2]
