HAIGHT of New York and Ontario
A little about me will explain my search.
I was raised in foster homes all of my childhood years. Going through hell all of those years I have been yearning to see what it is like to actually have people that I can call family. When I was 19 I did find my immediate families (both mother and father's sides). Father's side has a lot of know history that I am happy with for now. Mother's side - I have a lot of info on her father's family but nothing from her mother's side.
Through searches I have discovered my Maternal Grandmother's name as being Mabel (Harrison/Haight).
This is what I have to start.
Through more searching I think these are my ancestors:
Jesse HAIGHT (1768-1824) 5th Great Grandfather
Stephen HAIGHT (1795-1848) and Matura HUBBS (1803-1876) 4th Great Grandparents
Jesse Carman HAIGHT (1826-1905) and Elizabeth MINOR (1831-1916) 3rd Great Grandparents
Samuel Minor HAIGHT (1863-1930) and Francis (Fanny) O'DELL (1864-1927) 2 Great Grandparents
James BLACK and MABEL (HARRISON/HAIGHT) POWELL (born abt 1895 - some records say 1895 and others say 1896) Great Grandparents.
Here is my dilemma: Mabel (Harrison/Haight) seems to have appeared out of no where - others looking into Mabel are thinking that her biological parents were George HARRISON and Jennie FOND (From New York)
Anywhere that I look (other than what I mention below) it is said that Samuel and Fanny Haight never had any children and there is very little else mentioned about this couple (like they never existed).
1891 Canada Census - puts the couple in St. Thomas, Elgin East, Ontario, Can. as married
1898 - I found his name in a City Directory living in New York
1900 US Census - Couple are living in Niagara Falls Ward 3, Niagara, New York with their 5 year old adopted Daughter (Mabel H Haight)
1905 N.Y. Census - They are with their 9 year old daughter (Mabel Haight) does not mention adoption
1911 - Canada Census - They are again back in Ontario (St. Thomas) with their 16 year old daughter (Mabel Edna Haight)
1921 - Canada Census - They are still in St. Thomas with just the two mentioned - no daughter living with them.
I have not been able to find a birth certificate or adoption records -
It has been suggested to me that maybe she was born to a family member (possibly out of wedlock) and they took her in as their own.
There has also been a lot of issues with Mabel's daughter (Vera Arliene Black - my Grandmother) - that I will get into in another Journal.
If there is anyone that can help I would greatly appreciate it as my head is getting very sore pounding it into this brick wall in front of me.
Thank You in advance
