Charles Edward Norman Fitzgerald was actually born 30 June 1917. He was the 10th of 10 (know) children of Conrad Fitzgerald (1870-1945) & Janet Cochrane (1875-1942)
He first married Lois Ypres Hetet (1920-1945) from Te Kuiti in 1938. She was his next of kin, living in Waikiti Valley, Rotorua, but c/o Post Office, Te Kuiti, when he served in WWII as Signalman 4616.
Before enlisting he was a Labourer at 584 Moorhouse Ave., Waltham, Christchurch.

Charles was a Prisoner Of War at Stalag VIII-B (later 344), Lamsdorf, Poland. After his return from war he married Gwyneth Glaswen Griffiths (1925-2006) in 1945.

Charles died on 4 Sep 1994 aged 77 and is buried at Waikumete cemetery in Plot 177, Row 14, Area M of the Returned Service Persons section

His eldest brother, Reginald Conrad Fitzgerald, also known as Jack, served in WWI for NZ, moved to Australia, changed his name and served for Australia in WWII
