This a digitised version of an atlas and gazetteer of the German Empire from 1883. Something that might be useful is that churches are marked on the maps. An Atlas of the German Empire by Ludwig Ravenstein

Once you have found a place on this map that you are researching and if you are having trouble locating them on modern maps, try and overlay the maps onto Google Earth. This works well apparently. There are links for this at Atlas des Deutschen Reichs. At the bottom of this page is a link which has Google Earth placemarks of some towns - Marburg, Templin, Mindin. You may wish to view a place called Grunenplan, where Hermann WINDOLF was born. From Google Earth it's a small village surrounded by a large C shaped area of woods. Looks worth a visit!

Be careful of the size of the images, 8-10MB per map, and there are 9
maps. There are links for each map. So you don't have to download all of them. But it would be impossible over a dialup link.

Some interesting reading at this website on a ship on which Francis Xavier HAUCK came to Australia from Hamburg. Lots to look at on this site Freideburg.

Australia's Moreton Bay History

GenWiki is designed to become the main source for genealogy in the German-speaking areas of the world.
