Mohi Te Hokaanga, New Zealand : Looking for more information on Maori Chief of Ngati Whatua UPDATED

Journal by allycat

My husband's maternal grandfather was Charles Maynard MARRINER, sometimes known as Charlie or Minarapa. He was born 17 June 1908, New Zealand to parents: George (Hori Marena) MARRINER and Kuwhara (known as Hera) Minarapa Tika.

His great grandmother Hera (photographed below), was the daughter of Ngaere Minarapa Tika-Stanaway and Irahapeti (or Rihi) Tanapo Stanaway.

His 2G grandmother Ngaere (married to Irahapeti known as Rihi) was the daughter of Captain John James STANAWAY and Witaperene (known as Black Ann).

His 3G grandmother Witaperene as the daughter of Mohi Te Hokaanga II and Harihura.

His 4G grandfather Mohi Te Hokaanga II was the son of Mohi Te Hokaanga I who was Maori Chief Of Ngatiwhatua, my husband's 5th great grandfather.

If any Maori is reading or will read this, I state that as a pakeha, meaning "...anybody of Anglo-Celtic origin (England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales) and, as the integrated, Northern Europeans (Scandinavians, Germans, and Dutch), white Americans, Canadians and South Africans". source: Pakeha, it's origin and meaning I respect the Maori traditions and do not wish to appropropriate genealogical information unecessarily, but am truly trying to find my husband's whakapapa for the sakes of our children.

Hi there
My brother and cousin are embarking on a trip in July, specifically to establish the maori connections, tribal affliliations and maraes associated with Witaperene and her half sister Henipapa.
I'm hoping to include this information in the Tides of Time family tree book which I'm currently updating.
Please email me at freedomkiwis@xtra.co.nz so I can know your name and also let you know how I'm progressing. It's possible I may need some family updates from you also.
Many thanks
Wendy Clarricoats
(I am descendant from Henipapa)

Hi Alison, not sure if I've spoken to you yet but I now have ready and entire geneology record in the form of an updated version of the Tides of Time family tree book that was last done in 1985.
The revised version is now available and has the entire Marriner family in so far as they are connected to Mohi Te Hokaanga.

You can reach me at freedomkiwis@xtra.co.nz

Hi I am a Mackereth from the Mariner line.
You will notice that I used one r in the name Mariner which is correct for Richard. The name change to two rs sometime after Richard's death. (1857 or there abouts) The other family on the Hokianga at the same time early 1800s was Mathew Marriner and no relation. Mathew's wife was a sister of William Woon the clergyman from Mangungu.
Richard had a son called George by a Maori wife only recorded on the Wesleyan records as K. It was this George who drowned in the Te Papa creek (sited Coroner's report) George married Rora and had two children, George also known as Colin or Kerena, and a daughter Susan who married John Mackereth. Susan who I remember well was my great grand mother. Susan's name had the double r spelling on all her documents
This may clear up any troubles in searching this family line
