Looking for HEMPHILL of Chester County, PA

Query by JosephHemphill

My family came from Chester County. We have traced the family to Alexander Hemphill (B 1710) who came to the new world from County Derry, "Near Londonderry" about 1740 with two sons (James - 1731 and Joseph - 1732) and daughter Mary (1735) and settled in Goshen, Chester County, Pa. No record of a wife. Alexander died 15 Apr 1768 in Goshen Twnsp, Chester County, Pa. My information from that point on is pretty complete. What I am interested in, is any information that will lead me back from Alexander.

There were apparently several Alexander Hemphills in the area at the time. One born in Lancaster County, PA in 1701 Had a father named Robert. He was also from County Derry. My Alexander was born in Ireland in 1710. Thanks for the interest

I have a Hemphill in my line or think I do anyway. An ancestor of mine, Samuel Oliver, die din 1777 in Goshen. His will states executors Mary (his wife) and a James Hemphill (mentioned as brother in law). Is this Mary the same as the Mary you mentioned being born in 1735 and daughter of Alexander? Do you have anything saying who Mary married or that a Hemphill married an Oliver? Samuel & Mary had children James, Andrew, Nathaniel, Samuel Jr & Alexander. Being two of their sons were named after Hemphills or would seem so, I'm thinking Mary was a Hemphill and some relation to James & Alexander. Would you happen to know where Alexander is buried?

Sorry, I got Samuel's wife's name wrong. It's not Mary, it's Elizabeth. Obviously then, Elizabeth isn't a daughter of Alexander. But maybe still a Hemphill. I noticed there were a couple other Hemphills in the Chester/Delaware Co area about 1750. Namely an Andrew and a James.

I have one Elizabeth in that time frame. She was a granddaughter of Alexander, daughter of James. Born 1762, died 1846. No other info. I would presume that Alexander is buried in Goshen, since he was living with James (his son) when he died.
