Dear pduvall, Welcome. With genealogy, we start with ourselves and work backwards. Tip: Using the internet for your family tree, please don't post your or your rellies' full dates of birth, location and address details to protect privacy. Just the year is ok!

First up, on here search for 'free', 'freebies', and 'newbies' to read journals I have submitted on beginners tips.

Also goto FamilySearch.org they have tips as well on their homepage.

Have a read of other people's journals, note they have specific subject headings, with all surnames written in uppercase.

Write journals say "Seeking info re: MAHER family from Tipperary, Ireland" as an example subject heading.
