I have family in Ardmore Pa,my grandfather lived for a time in Maryland...Joseph Nathan brightful. My uncle s Billie and I have an aunt carryanne. Grandmother Laura. I was told or name goes back to a native American tribe however I come to dead ends researching any info. I\'m a 36 year old female.

Hi not a common name but assuming the base is English then it is one of the many surnames with the root "bright" (Anglo Saxon "beorght") many of which are derived from place names. However Brightful must refer to an aspect of the personality of the first owner of the name, perhaps given as a nickname. The meaning would be full of life or lively. in the same vain are surnames such as Brighteye, Brightman and Brightmore.

The Anglo Saxon word is taken to mean "illustrious" or "brilliant"
