Lillian Harriett Georgina SECORD was born on the 17th June 1868 in Christchurch, the 6th of 6 children of Guy Stephen SECORD (1833-1969) & Martha DUNFORD (1842-1883)

- her father Guy was from Ontario, Canada, he died in Rakaia
- her mother's parents owned a Hotel & Ferry business in Rakaia and had arrived in Christchurch in December 1850 from Wiltshire, England. Guy helped with the business

her siblings were:
31 August 1860-1878 - Alda Alice Adlaide SECORD
- married Thomas McGUIRE 1878

30 January 1862-1929 - Florence Almeda Theresa SECORD
- married Harry BENNETT 1884 in Timaru

16 April 1864-1867 - Maud Frances Elizabeth SECORD
- died aged 3

7 September 1865 - Rose Henrietta Mary SECORD
- married William KEMBLE 1884

22 December 1866-1942 - Charles William Edward Guy SECORD
- married Mary Elizabeth McCOOMBS 1891 in Wellington

- Lillia married William John WELSH in 1883 in Christchurch

- their children were:

1883 - Jane Welsh

1885-1885 - Nicholas Welsh
- died aged 4 months

1887-1853 - Nicholas Welsh
- married Catherine ROTHERY 1911

1888-1888 - Mary Ann Wesh
- died aged 11 days

1890 - Mary Ann Welsh

1892 - James Welsh

By 1895 Lillian & William were living apart.
She was in poor health and could not work so she took him to court (in Christchurch) for maintenance. He however, was bringing up the 6 children and barely making enough to support them all, only earning 31 shillings a week (about $256 in 2010). The court however, instructed him to pay her 8 shillings a week (about $63)

you are correct, Harriet never married Frederick John Maindonald (1866-1939)
That was Harriet Lillian "Lil" WELCH (1870-1949) from Tydd St Mary Lincolnshire, England
Interestingly, they are both buried in Christchurch - Plot 35, Block PR7 at Waimairi Cemetery

Apparently 'our' Lillian Harriet was seen in Gisborne in 1912
- a Lillian Harriet OGIER (wife of Louis Augustus Ogier (1869-1950) was buried in Taruheru Cemetery in Gisborne on 4th May 1939 but I don't think it is her, the birth date would have to have been about 1870

a LOT more research is required for Lillian's whereabouts

During the court case in Christchurch on 23rd August 1895 against William John Welsh for neglecting to provide adequate means for his wife Lillian Harriet Welsh, William stated that he had 6 children and himself to support on (the now equivalent) $256 and that he was (the now equivalent of) about $512,000 in debt. This suggests, surely, that he may have been in business of some sort
