The Idaho Bureau of Vital Records and Health Statistics
maintains birth and death records filed from July 1911 to the
present, and marriage and divorce records filed from May 1947 to
the present.
Remarks: All requests must include a copy
of Government or State-issued Photo ID and signature of the person
requesting the certificate.
How to obtain a certified copy:
Mail-In - Requests sent to Vital Records and Health Statistics by U.S. Postal Service will be completed within 5-7 business days after they are received;
Remarks: Any request requiring an amendment
or legal action may take 2-3 weeks after the request is received
and payment is receipted.

A Certificate of Live Birth must be filed for each live
birth occurring within this state, by the attending physician or
other person in attendance, even if the infant lives for only a
very short period of time.

Electronic Birth Certificate (EBC) system, most hospital completed

Unreported Births:
If the Local Registrar should learn of an unrecorded birth, they should contact the person responsible for reporting the birth.
Remarks: Any problems encountered in
obtaining a complete certificate should be referred to the State
Registrar.
Births occurring at home or other location but not in or en
route to a hospital or birthing center, are to have a birth
certificate prepared and filed within 15 days of the date of birth,
by the physician, midwife, or other person in attendance at or
immediately after the birth.
Births Occurring in a Moving Conveyance:
Births occurring in a moving conveyance are to be recorded
as having occurred at the place where the baby was first removed
from the conveyance.
Foundlings:
A "Certificate of Live Birth--Foundling" is to be filed for each child of unknown parentage within fifteen (15) days of being found.
Remarks: Since the parentage is not known (should not be known), a foundling birth certificate must be placed on file for a child abandoned under the Idaho Safe Haven Act.
Late and Delayed Birth Registration:
All births registered one (1) year or more after the date of
birth are to be registered directly with the State Registrar as
delayed filings on a "Delayed Certificate of Birth" form.

24-hour report has been received), he or she should immediately
contact the mortician.
Deaths Occurring in a Moving Conveyance:
Deaths occurring in a moving conveyance are to be registered
in the district (county) where the body was first removed from the
conveyance.
Remarks: A common situation occurs when an
injured person is placed in an ambulance and, according to the
attendants, dies before the ambulance crosses the county or state
line.
Late and Delayed Death Registration:
The Local Registrar may accept for registration a
Certificate of Death within 1 year of the date of
death.
Correction of Death Certificates:
The funeral facility can make a change/correction to the
death certificate after it has been filed with the Local Registrar
as long as the certificate is still in the possession of the Local
Registrar.
Remarks: A Person wishing to correct a
death certificates that has been registered with Vital Statistics
should either work with the funeral facility responsible for filing
the certificate or be referred to Vital Statistics.
Authorization for Final Disposition:
The mortician or person acting as such who first assumes
possession of a dead body must obtain an authorization for final
disposition prior to final disposal or removal of the body from
Idaho.
Transportation of Bodies Into the State:
A dead body transported into a registration district for
disposal from out of state must be accompanied by a transit permit
issued according to the laws and rules of the place where the death
occurred.
Remarks: The out-of-state transit permit
will be accepted by the sexton of the cemetery or by the crematory
official as authorization for burial or other disposal in
Idaho.
Presumed Death -- Body Cannot Be Located:
A court order from an Idaho Court is required for the State
Registrar to place a death certificate on file when a death is
presumed to have occurred within this state but the body cannot be
located.
Remarks: The death certificate will be
marked "Presumptive", will show the date of registration, and will
identify the court and the date of the decree.

death) occurring or stillborn fetus found within this
state.

Stillbirths occurring in a moving conveyance are to be
registered in the district (county) where the stillborn fetus was
first removed from the conveyance.
Late and Delayed Stillbirth Registration:
The Local Registrar may accept for registration a
Certificate of Stillbirth within 1 year of the date of the
delivery.
Correction of Stillbirth Certificates:
Persons wishing to correct stillbirth certificates that have
been registered with Vital Statistics should be referred to Vital
Statistics.
Remarks: Issues on paternity should be
referred to the Paternity Specialist at Vital Statistics. Care
should be taken when completing any correction
affidavit.
