- Volunteer as a location editor. You'll gain access to edit the location and can add information and resources.
- Volunteer for the Assist! program and provide local lookups for people who need local assistance.
Be sure to drill down to the specific state, region, county, city, or even cemetery that you can help in. The more specific your volunteer location, the better the requests will be.

Regardless of the reasons, vital records serve a valuable
purpose, and the State of Hawaii maintains these important
documents, which are prime sources of genealogical information;
but, unfortunately, official vital records are available only for
relatively recent periods.
Remarks: All requests must include a copy
of Government or State-issued Photo ID and signature of the person
requesting the certificate.
Vital records (birth, death, marriage, and divorce certificates) on file with the Department of Health may be amended (i.e., changes, corrections, additions, deletions, or substitutions) upon submission of the required documentation.
Fee: $3.00
Notes: An original entry on a birth, death,
marriage, or divorce certificate may be amended by either the
private request of an individual or an order of a court of
competent jurisdiction. An amendment includes changes, corrections,
additions, deletions, or substitutions.
Remarks: Once an amendment of an item is made,
that item will not be amended again without a court order or, if a
person's name is to be changed, without a change of name
decree.
Three ways to obtain a copy of your certificate:
Mail-In - As of January 2009, certified copies will normally be sent out within 2-3 weeks after receipt and approval of the application.
Remarks: The return time may be extended for
records that are very old, because the search to locate the record
may take longer, or in the process of being filed, because the
official record is still being created.
In Person - Certified copies are usually not issued on the day the application is made. Same-Day service may be provided upon presentation of written documentation establishing the need for urgency.
Remarks: Certified copies will normally be
available for pick-up about 10 working days after the request is
approved. The pick-up time may be extended for records that are
very old, because the search to locate the record may take longer,
or in the process of being filed, because the official record is
still being created.
VitalCheck
Secured online applications to request for vital records, which
accepts all major credit card payments, can be made through
VitalCheck with an additional charge for their service.

Local government authorities and clergymen recorded earlier
than 1860 birth records. You will find these at the Hawaii State
Archives, the Department of Health, and the Daughters of the
American Revolution Library in Honolulu.

Time-frame: Since 1853
Notes: Additional copies ordered at the same time
are $4.00 each.

Honolulu, for instance, date from 1841 to 1896. Records are usually
in Hawaiian.
Apostilles and Authentications
Apostilles and the authentication of certified copies of vital records for international legalization can be provided. Apostilles are prepared by the Office of the Lieutenant Governor.
Fee: $10.00
Notes: Additional copies ordered at the same time
are $4.00 each.
Remarks: For those foreign countries who are
nations that have joined the 1961 Hague Convention, the
authentication process requires just one official form called an
Apostille to accompany the birth, death, marriage, or divorce
certificate.
Records of events that occurred more than 75 years prior to the current year can be ordered by persons working on genealogy projects. Since genealogy requests are not considered urgent, they are not processed as priority requests.
Remarks: Applications for issuance of copies of
vital records by an individual working on genealogy projects must
be submitted in writing. No telephone or Internet (e-mail) requests
will be accepted.
Amended certificates of birth may be prepared and filed with the Department of Health, as provided by law, for
- 1) a person born in Hawaii who already has a birth certificate filed with the Department of Health or;
- 2) a person born in a foreign country.
Remarks: Any additional application forms that
may be required will be provided by the Department of Health after
receipt of the necessary documents in support of the establishment
of an amended certificate of birth.
Late registration, registration one year or more after the date of the event's occurrence, of certificates are permitted subject to evidentiary requirements.
Remarks: Registration of a late certificate of
death, marriage, or divorce may be requested by the person in
charge of the disposition of the body, marriage officiant or
performer, or court clerk, respectively.
