Henry William ROIL was born 9 March 1821 in Alton, Hampshire

In 1845 Henry was a Farmer in Waimea East

He married Jane COWIE in 1852 in Lyttelton

He married Sarah Isabella COLLETT in 1854 in Old St. Michael`s Church, Christchurch
- one of their sons, Henry Thomas Roil married Amy Louisa HARRIOTT in Christchurch in 1884 and later married Minnie GROVES in Woodville in 1897. This Henry Roil was buried in Taita in 1943

* On the 23rd March 1844 Henry Roil was charged with assaulting the late Thomas Tyrell, one of the unfortunate men who fell at Wairau.
It appeared that the prisoner, while intoxicated, had quarrelled with his father, and on Tyrell interposing he struck at him with a knife and wounded him in the arm.
By the death of Tyrrell and the lapse of nearly two years since the offence was committed the evidence was defective.
His Honour, after sommenting on the perilous situation in which the prisoner would have stood had Tyrrell lived, directed the jury to acquit him

* The following advertisement in the "Nelson Examiner and New Zealand Chronicle" could be about Henry prior to his move south.
It is dated 23rd March 1850:-
... To be LET or SOLD, the FIFTY ACRE SECTION, No.71, Waimea East, adjoining Mr Saxton`s farm, distant five miles from Nelson, with a fine stream of water running on one side; at present occupied by Mr Roil
For terms of sale or lease apply to B. Walmsley, Motueka. If not sold, can be leased from Lady Day next.
The above is one of the best Sections in the district.

* Henry William Roil was the licensee of the Sawyer`s Arms Hotel, Papanui at some stage. It was destroyed by fire in 1898, by that time a Mr Cooper was the owner

Henry died in 1852 from an infected leg wound. He was 41

Sarah was also married to James Smith BARKER in 1873, 25 years BEFORE the death of Henry. She died in 1898 aged 76
- Sarah is in the book `The Roots of the Clover` which is a history of the Collett sisters and their families. It was written by Elsie Locke, granddaughter of Ann (nee Collett) and Isaac Bryan.
In it it is mentioned that Sarah`s parents, Francis and Sarah (nee KING) Collett came to Canterbury on the CRESSY in 1850 and were reunited with their eldest daughter Sarah who was already there.
It also says that Henry William Roil was her first husband. She also had a sister Ann who travelled on the ship with her parents and that in 1856 her two brothers Henry and Wlliam came out from Australia and they settled first in Kaiapoi (19km north of Christchurch)
