Looking for a Mayes in the maize!

Query by Lesandfred

My Gt2 grandfather was Mayes, married a Rebecca (thought to be Church)(born 1825/6) in Huntingdonshire. They had 2 children, Alfred (1849/50) and Elizabeth, both born in the Crew area. Gt2 Mayes we believe was then killed in a forge accident and Rebecca remarried (1852-5)one George Smith and had a new family.
I can find no trace of the death in the usual archives, nor his birth - and only one reference to a possible name (Edward).
Can anyone help, please?

Hi Noggin
You do indeed have the right family! Thank you!!
I had the 1861 census but could not get an entry in 1851 to get Edwards name confirmed. By a process of elimination I linked Rebecca Church with Edward mayes in the FreeCen marriage records but had not seen a Rebecca White in that record.
Death record was equally elusive - but I had assumed that as both Elizabeth & Alfred were born in Crew, and Rebecca remarries to live in that area, then the death would also have occured in or around Crew. The same thing applies to the re-marriage.

This takes me quite a long way forward Thanks.

Are you connected by any chance?
