Looking for Alfred HAWKES
I'm looking for information on Alfred HAWKES b2 Sept 1853 in Aston Warwickshire England occupation Watchmaker.

The OROTAVA arrived Sydney 21 May 1904, Alfred is noted on passenger list as going on to Wellington New Zealand.
Can any one help me with information or where I can find out more on New Zealand arrivals.
Comments
His wife and girls all died in England. Did he leave them to come out here?
Yes, the Orotava only dropped off 42 passengers in Sydney and 30 of those were from Fremantle. The ship resumed sailing at 4:00 that afternoon. There's a lot of kiwi's in here that may be able to help you further. Jan
Hi Janilye
We don't really know what happened with Alfred and his family - they may have split up - Alfred wanting to go to NZ and Clara wanting to stay in England - or he went out ahead to get things sorted and something happened to him and he never returned to England he could have started a new family we just don't know - but it doesn't explain where he was between 1891 England census and 1904 departure.
I had a look at the site edmondsallan suggested but couldn't find the Orotava's arrival in NZ it may be to new.
I'm hoping that some very kind kiwi can help me out with Alfred he is a real mystery after the 1891 England Census.
Thanks anyway I have my fingers crossed.
Sounds like they separated. So he never bothered to contact his daughters? The were still alive in the 1970s. Are you decended from one of them?
Clara Jane died on the 31 August 1936 at Greystones Shutt Lane Earlswood, Warwickshire, England (source: England & Wales, Death Index: 1916-2005)

I, only just got the information, haven't checked it myself. Not knowing much about English geography I'm not sure where that is.
Hello Asheppard, Just a very slight clue, have a look at this. re- A.Hawkes, watchmaker
I haven't gone through all the papers. There may be something else.

Hi Janilye
I did find an Alfred Hawkes in 1905, 1911 Wellington New Zealand Electrol rolls on Ancestry listed as watchmaker, so this could well be him.
Thanks so much for your help. I'm still mystified by why he never returned to his family in England.

Anastasia
It was not uncommon for people to marry again undetected out here. I have someone in my tree who did just that but was a travelling ships surgeon James Ellis 1790-1863 and he kept them both and after the wife died in England he took his aussie wife and children over there to live. And through all those years nobody said a word.
Perhaps Alfred married. At least now you have some place to look. You might find a death or funeral notice with a few names attached. Now, wouldn't that be great! by the way I have not stopped looking for Theophilus. I think now he either changed his name or went to America. Jan
Hi Jan
Thanks for your replies. Alfred Hawkes has become a three way family thread with another new found cousin jumping in to see what they can find. Im afraid we are all floundering amateur's. My 'new' cousin seemed to think that Alfred died in 1923 in NZ leaving a will but she can't remember where she got the info.
What's the best NZ site to try and find out.
As for Theo. he has been a devil to find and thank you so much for your continued searching.
kind regards
Anastasia
Anything to do with New Zealand, message ngairedith in here. Jan
Only found 2 within the search range which suit.
1923/11082 Hawkes Alfred 62Y
1948/20781 Hawkes Ernest Alfred 67Y
https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/Search/Search.aspx?Path=%2fqueryEntry.m%3ftype%3ddeaths
actually that second one isn't right. The 1923 is close and that's it. No others.
Found 2 marriages.
1914/8992 Flora Macdonald Guird Bell Alfred Percival Hawkes
1906/1489 Mary Ethel Hayes Ernest Alfred Hawkes
If he is A.Hawkes the watchmaker, he didn't change his name, but if he isn't he could have.
Thanks Janilye
Don't know who ngairedith is could be connected I'm not sure.
Thanks for the link, I'm pretty sure Alfred didn't have a middle name but then again what's to stop him adding one.
The plot thickens, Oh where is Sherlock Holmes when you need him?
Thanks
Anastasia
Oops read it wrong
How do I message ngairedith ?
Hello asheppard,
how can I help you ??
Hello ngairedith
I'm after any information on an Alfred Hawkes after he arrived in Wellington in 1904-5
I have the information on the advertisements from the newspapers for his watchmaker business, that is if it's the right Alfred Hawkes.
I have a couple of cousins who are on his trail as well, one has suggested that he died in 1923..
Any information would be very helpful and much appreciated.
