Looking for ancestors ancestors of James McIndoe a potter born in Calton Glasgow

Query by colmacro

My GGGF James was a potter born in Calton Glasgow in 1834.He married Ann Mullin (or Millan)on July 01 1852 at St Mary's RC Chapel Glasgow. Ann was from Tyrone. They had a son James born June 21 1855 in Bridgeton Glasgow.
He was my Great Grandfather. Census records suggest he moved in his early years of marriage between Glasgow and Liverpool where he finally settled. McIndoe family members, presumably relatives, had been living in the Liverpool area for at least the previous 30-40 years.

My problem is tracing ancestry back before GGGF James. The 1851 Census has him living as a lodger at 136 King St Calton Glasgow. What was his family of origin and where were they? Who was his father?
I have found one or two candidates for his father but I can establish no definite links.

If anyone out there has researched this particular lineage or can give any pointers I would love to hear from you.

Thanks.

Hi Colin,

Very exciting!

You and I share the same great great grandfather James Macindoe born about 1800!

My line of the family comes down through James's second marriage to Charlotte Craig.
One of their children was George Macindoe who was a shoemaker in Glasgow (died 1897).
One of his children was another George, who with his brother Robinson, emigrated to Melbourne Australia in 1907 and established a building business.

Would be great to catch up!

kind regards,

Dougmc

Hi Doug
Thanks for your kind reply; it's great to make acquaintance with a distant relative!

I have first mention of James the Potter, then age 8, in the 1841 Census living with his father James the Hand Loom Weaver (age 41). What had happened to his mother, I wonder? Re James HLW, this record would have him born in 1799 or 1800. James HLW was my Great Great Great GF; I was born in 1948.
When it comes to this James I have a problem. The best candidates I have come up with are James McIndoe b 18/06/99 in Glasgow (son of William McIndoe and Agnes Bryson) and James McIndoe b 28/07/99 in Airdrie/New Monkland (son of William and Margaret Summervill).

Back to the present: Margaret (marg123) who I know we have both spoken with has James HLW marrying Margaret McCallum (Glasgow 13/05/ 1827). I have this as a strong candidate too but have not so far been able to 'nail' it. I have been unable to eliminate other possibilities. I know you have devoted a great deal of time into researching these early McIndoes who we share as ancestors and any clarification which your findings throw on the birth and marriage of James HLW would be most gratefully received!

All Best Wishes to You and Yours

Colin.
