Looking for ancestors of JAMES THOMPSON, a Tailor, of NORTHALLERTON (c 1802- 1843)
We have hit a brick wall with James! He is on the 1841 census of Northallerton, Yorkshire, as a Tailor.
He was living with - but not married to - Christiana MITCHELL. They had 4 children, born between 1835 and 1842.
James died on 10 January 1843. We are not certain of his birth date, as his age is taken from the 1841 census.
We cannot find his parents, as there is no birth certificate prior to 1837 and the surname is quite common!
Can anybody help, or suggest where we may look??

Do you have a copy of his death certificate?? it should give you some clues to his parents.
There are two James Thompsons who died in 1843, I presume yours is the Mar quarter 1843
Deaths Mar 1843
THOMPSON James Northallerton 24 291
Deaths Sep 1843
THOMPSON James Northallerton 24 249
This could be a possible baptism, BUT, you would need a copy of the death to verify parents

It may be worth contacting the Parish records office to see if they can give you more details on the baptism of James, his fathers occupation etc.
It looks like there are a few Thompson families in Brompton via Northallerton
Edward Thompson & Ann Gallantree
Robert Thompson & Ann Best
Mathew Thompson & Ann Mitcheson
all have children around the same time Edward & Ann are the only ones with a son James it appears that they had two sons named James one in 1792 presume he died & one in 1794 which is above.
Thanks very much for your help.
There is just one problem!! We have James' Death Certificate and it states that he was 40 when he died in - as you correctly presume - January 1843. It also states that he was a Tailor. We know this to be the case.
However, English Death Certificates do not give any details of parents. We know that some Scottish certificates show this - as we have Scots ancestry as well as English!
The 1841 census shows James to be 35 - although this is sometimes inaccurate.
Christiana Mitchell's details are correct and we have her certificates as well. Her age is roughly correct on the 1841 census and all up to 1871. She died in 1878.
We would love to believe that you have "found" James for us, but the only hope we have is that the registrar misread an age of "48" for the "40" that is shown on the death certificate, or that Christiana did not know his age! We think that he may have been married to someone else, as he fathered 4 children with his "partner" Christiana without marrying her. She put her marital status as "widow" on the 1871 census, but is shown with her maiden name of "Mitchell" on her death certificate.
Thanks very much and good luck with your own research.

The parish record may show some light on Edwards occupation, sometimes the children followed fathers trade, became tailors or drapers and cloth makers, it might be worth trying to get hold of a copy the original entry record.
