Looking for ancestors of Wesley Albert YANDA

Query by UncaJoe

I have no information about my grandfather's parents or his history prior to arriving in Cass Lake, Minnesota. There are hints that he came from Canada but I can't verify this.

Wesley's father was Joseph YANDA born on the 24 July 1847 in Tabor, South Bohemia, Czech Republic and died on the 31 October 1911 in Cedar Rapids, Linn, Iowa and his second wife Katrina HANZLIK, Katrina was born on the 16 October 1850 in Plzen, a city in Western Bohemia, Czech Republic and died on the 20 May 1911 in Cedar Rapids Ward 12, Linn, Iowa.
Joseph and his first wife Mary SEVERA 1850-1924 had been married in Bohemia and arrived in the Maryland Baltimore on the 23 May 1874 with one son Joseph 1874-1946. They divorced In the District Court of Linn County, Iowa on 5 October 1876.
Joseph with several other men from Bohemia went to Cedar Rapids to work for meat packer T. M. Sinclair.

You could try posting a message on Czech Republic Genealogy Forum to try and find the Yanda family I did have a quick look and the Yanda's of Tabor district are mentioned

There are several genealogy sites of former Czechoslovakia. Just remember it's JANDA over there. I don't know how common JANDA is in Tabor but you just may get lucky. Good luck!

Thank you so very much. I had known of the Joseph Yanda who was buried in 1911 at Cedar Rapids, but had no true connecting evidence. I'll check the link you sent. Again, thank you for responding. Others of my family will be pleased.

I suppose I should give you what I know of the correct decendancy of Joseph and Wesley as well.
Firstly as you know he married Mary/Maria SEVERA in Bohemia and had Joseph YANDA jr. b:1874 Cedar Rapids and died in Cedar Rapids, Linn, Iowa on 1 February 1946. I have no idea whom he married. But after the divorce Mary went on to marry again also a man named SEROVY.

The children of Joseph YANDA and Katrina HANZLIK whom he married on the 4 March 1878 were:-
**1. Wesley Albert Yanda b: 27 December 1878 Cedar Rapids and died 19 January, 1939 in Superior, Douglas, Wisconsin m. Dottie May Harris on the 6 July 1917 at the lutheran Church in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and had 5 children Raymond Albert 1899?1971, Alice May 1901?1978, Fredrick Wesley 1906?1945, Enid Viola 1908- ?, Sarah Rachel 1911?1988
He then married Olga SCHILLER and I think had another 5 children.

2. Jennie Rosie Yanda 1882?1962 m Samuel S SMYLIE 1881-1967 at Cedar Rapids on the 15 June 1904, they had 3 children
Margaret Smylie 1905 ? 1998, Ruth Katherine Smylie 1909 and
Marvin Samuel Smylie 1915 ? 1992

3. John Joseph (Jack) Yanda 1885?1934 m. Anna HAUPT 1886-1962 3 children

4.Edward Joseph (Buck) Yanda 1889 ? 1962 m. Clara Olivia VREDENBERG on the 29 April 1914 She had been married before.

5. Francis Sarafinski Yanda 1895?1956 m. Leona Mae BARR on the 10 July 1915 in Cedar Rapids.

I found that Dottie Mae was known by several names, including Dorthea HARRIS / ARMSTRONG / SPECK or SPEEK/ YANDA and HUSTON 1880 ? 1939. I'll leave you to work it out; She was the daughter of Charles C HARRIS from Pennsylvania and Sarah Viola WOOD 1855 ? 1880 Sarah's second husband was ARMSTRONG and maybe the third was SPEEK/SPECK I don't know my head took a spin. Also Wesley was sometimes known as Wencil.

Hang on I have Wesley's marriage dates mucked up. He married Dottie in 1897. I spose you know that part better than me.

For Joseph's ancestry it's probably a good idea to have a look at this Wencil Vaclav Janda

Please forgive my delay in responding. My health is not good and when home my time is usually taken up with legal and financial matters. This is a lot of information that we have not seen before. No wonder none of us has anything substantial to put together in any coherent way. Too many Josephs and there's no telling when Janda became Yanda.
Speaking for my brother, daughters and beloved aunt, I will express our gratitude for all the work you've put into this. Certainly a twisty, turny path to follow and much data cannot be justified. One small point, in case you're keeping track; My grandmother's name was Algar Rebecka Yanda (nee-Schiller).
