Looking for Anthony Richardson Castleton of Ireland

Query by danacastleton

My grandfather, George Castleton came to New Zealand in the late 1890's. His parents were Anthony Richardson Castleton and Anne (nee Mitchell). His siblings were: Sarah Margaret (or Margaret Sarah), Eliza, Edward & Aldred (twins), Samuel and Evelyn.

I have no information about Anthony or his children and what became of them. From my grandfather's death notice he was survived by his wife, son, 3 brother and 1 sister in Ireland and 1 sister in Canada. Not sure what happened to the other sister.

Anne Castleton was still alive at the 1911 Irish Census, living in Clara, Co. Offaly with Samuel who was still single, aged 33.
In 1901 Ann is described as a dressmaker and Sam a flour miller. Evelyn was still at school.

On 09/10/1861 Nathaniel Lowe, a relation of mine, married Susan Frances Castleton in Ballyloughloe, Westmeath. Susan, born in 1843, was a daughter of George C. Castleton, a farmer. This family emigrated to New Zealand on 19/12/1883 on the Rangitiki and arrived on 15/04/1884.

On 17/05/1866 Maria Lowe married James McCormick in Kilcleagh Church, Moate, Westmeath. Richardson Castleton was a witness.

Thank you for your reply. I really love this website as within half an hour I had finally found my family link to Ireland. It came as a shock and surprise since I had been searching for years. I have made contact with a descendant of Nathaniel & Susan Lowe, who lives in the Auckland area of New Zealand.

I know from the relative in Ireland that Eliza Castleton died and is buried in Ballyloughloe where her father Richardson was buried and where Ann was eventually buried.

I have had no luck with the sister that moved to Canada but I shall try to obtain Birth, Death and Marriage Certificates.

Dana,

It's good to hear from you.
I'm John Mitchell and Nathaniel Lowe was the brother of my direct ancestor, Andrew Lowe.
I did a little more on the Castletons last night.
Susan and Anthony Richardson were siblings. I think Letitia was another and she married John McCue in 1864.
This is my current knowledge of George's siblings:
Margaret Sarah born 1867 & died 1875
Eliza born 1870 & died 1892
George

I am a decendant of Catherine Higgins nee Mitchell, a sister of Anne Mitchell. Anne Mitchell and Richard Castleton's marriage is recorded in records of St Georges Church Kenagh, Co Longford in 1867. Catherine Mitchell was already married to Archibald Higgins at that time and living at Cartrons
