Looking for Charles Robert Whyte of New Zealand
Charles Robert WHYTE , son of George Whyte and wife Hannah nee Cherry was born in Cust, South Island,New Zealand possibly June 1890. After his father George Whyte died in July 1900, Hannah married a widower, William Brown and they moved their two families to Taranaki in 1902( ref: School transfers to North Island remark as to next school)
I have found a Robert Whyte as a private in the Taranaki Rifles in 1903-1911 but after that there is a "brick wall".
Verbal family has varying information - from a step sister Margaret Brown it is possible he went to Australia to another that thought he may have been killed at Gallopoli but while able to identify a Robert Whyte at Gallopoli this is not " our" Robert Whyte.
I have found a reference in the NSW Australia Police gazette in 1914 for a gunner Robert Charles WHYTE, born in Canterbury, New Zealand aged 23 1/2 yrs who deserted from the Royal Australian Garrison Artillery at Queenscliff in December 1913 after a years service. However cannot find an Australian army record to match name and check if this is my man.
Any thoughts greatly appreciated.
