My daughters partner-Garry Mewburn-is the son of joan mewburn (nee Equid) from Mildura. He says this is his grandfather Hector Equid 1915-1998. Garry looks very much like him !! Sandra Thompson

What about Harry Equid ?
Born: 8 October 1924
Died: 2 February 1984
Harry Equid was a talented half-forward and follower who went to Essendon after serving with the armed forces in the Middle East and the Pacific Region during World War II.
He had earlier played with Mildura Rovers.
He had a superb physique and was capable of anything on his day, but lacked consistency. He was a spectacular mark and was one of the last noted place kick exponents in the League.
Equid was tough, and once kicked a goal with a badly broken ankle. On another occasion, he went into the crowd to grab a barracker who had riled him.
He was on the half-forward flank in the 1946 premiership team and was also Essendon's third top goalkicker that year with 35 goals, His best return was seven goals in a big win over Hawthorn.
After leaving Essendon, Equid became captain-coach of Coburg from 1949 to 1951 and a player there in 1952, and then captain-coach of Kyneton in 1953.
After this, he played with South Mildura in 1954.
Equid died on 2nd February, 1984.
Here's his photo

We have seen the photo of Harry (Henry) he Hector and the Gary Mewburn I mentioned, all look very much alike. Garry was always told when he was young, just how much like his uncle Harry he looked. same height and build-very similar face too.

Re: the photograph, cacroker, all three Equids' served in the Army in the second world war.
Charles Edward EQUID b: 13 May 1913, in the 7th Batt.
Hector Gordon EQUID b: 22 November 1915, 2/12 FIELD REGIMENT and
Henry Mervyn EQUID b: 8 June 1920, also in the 2/12 FIELD REGIMENT.
The 2/12 was part of the 7th. Battalion, which means all three boys were in the same region, ie Egypt, Tobruk and Palastine, where most of these donkey photos originated. I have one of my grandfather and 2 others all on one donkey in Egypt.
It's a shame we haven't got into the habit of writing names on the back of photo's. It is frustrating and I'm guilty of it myself

Garry Mewburn tells me, that somewhere along the line someone was adopted, they are not sure who that was-do you know ? Yes we should all put names to faces on photo's !!

Thank you all so much. I thought I knew who each of these pics were (my uncles Heck, Ted and Harry). My Mum was Ivy Croker (née Equid).

You are correct Sandra, or rather Garry is. There have been quite a few attempts to do a family tree by one of John Equid's sons, David. He hit lots of secrecy which we now think is unnecessary but the older generations are still committed to.

Yes there was an adoption. This male child was born to Doreen Equid, Heck's wife. It appears that after the War, marriages were severely tested with the men dealing with demons they kept to themselves. The boy was not Hectors son, but he has made contact with me. He was adopted by the Crough family. Doreen as mother's name was on the birth certificate but not the name of his father. This man Aloicious Crough, or Louis as he prefers is seeking all information he can find. He lives in Perth and all he knows is that his father is said to have been a truck driver.

So Louis is the half-brother of Heck's children.

I last heard that Gayle Equid, my cousin was living in Perth and had hoped to connect them. I was/am unsure who is still alive of Heck's children.

David Equid and his family also live in Perth.

The other little family skeleton appears to be with Harry. I had an email from a woman, Harry's daughter who was very keen to point out that she was his only legitimate offspring. And it appears he deserted his wife and child. When I am unsure but he lived with my mother and father for a while ( probably during his Essendon football days as we lived in a nearby suburb). This was not great either as my Dad and Harry did not get along. Looking back now it would have been related to this marriage separation, and his subsequent relationship.

It's interesting to try to pull the threads together after so many years. Hurt still seems to run deeply

The only Equid's I kept in touch with as an adult was my Aunty Annie (Equid) and her daughter Lola Cockington of Adelaide. She had two children, a boy and a girl that I recall.

My mother, father and I lived with Heck, Doreen and Gayle when we were waiting for our house to be finished being built. After that our contact became less freqent, especially after my brother Ron's youngest son (Andrew Croker aged two) was hit by a car crossing from the Fitzroy Bowling Club to the local milk bar with his older sister Leanne. They had been visiting Heck, Doreen and Gayle.

Mum wrote to her sisters, nephews ( Francises) and nieces until she died in 2001.

Next year on the 2 May, it will be 45 years since my brother Kevin Alfred Croker died in a silver mine fire in Kellogg Idaho. His ex-wife Janet is still alive and lives in Colorado. I see her about every five years. They had two children in the marriage; David Croker and Tonnya Croker, now Redmond.

Tonnya and her husband Tom have one daughter, Holly who would be in her late teens now.

There was another child born to Kevin and his de facto Linda. This little girl's name is Kirsten but I doubt she still has the surname Croker. She would be living in Idaho, whereas Kevin's first family are scattered throughout Colorado.

David and his wife have no children.

I myself, had one child, although never married. Hid name is Giancarlo Spadazzi and he is 27 years old and as yet unmarried. His father is Louis Spadazzi. I am aged 60 and Louis is 84.

That should help fill in a few holes.

Thank you all for the war service dates and details. With so many Equid children it has been difficult for David Equid to pull together a comprehensive family tree.

At least we have a solid base taking shape.

Would love to know more details about all the Equid kids, children, grandchikdren and how many generations we now have.

Will be tracing my Grandparent's Edward and Catherine's lineage too. Interestingly on my mother's birth certificate it lists her mother's maiden name as McIlhinney not Mc Ellery. Another little mystery to solve.

Hello,I am Sharon Searle.I am the daughter of David Searle and Patricia Equid,Harry Equid only blood daughter alive. Harry left my Grandmother Dorothy Helen Equid (Love). Her previous husband George Haley died in WW1.They had 2 children,John And Elizabeth Haley. I have letters written by Harry Equid to his daughter Patricia Equid, that her brother gave to her in the 1990's? He also gave a football training book, with notes and his newspaper articles in it.My mum was in big shock that these were all put away and kept from her, my grandmother orders to Uncle John. My mother Pat can remember Harry coming back to the house to grab his stuff and leaving.she said it was heartbreaking, as she was daddy's girl. You may of seen on TV, Paige Scott, number 32 for the Essendon Woman AFL team. She is my mum brother great granddaughter. She loves to do the place kick just like My Pop Harry. I have 2 older brother's James and Shayne. My mum and Shayne have Equid looks in them.James has 2 daughters Bianca and Jasmine. Shayne has a daughter and twin Sons. Then I have a 23 year old son Jesse and a 16 year old daughter Chelsea. We are all single parents now. Shayne has a grandson Rykah Jasper Desire Bertrand, who is 2. He is Taylah and Dorothy son, who are married. So Harry has 3 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and 1 great, great grandchild.I have Given Dave Equid all our information, so Harry Branch will be up to date. Not sure if he aware, my brother divorced his wife.So hello to our Equid Cousin's. We live in Melton, 35 km from Melbourne. Digest Rest is part of our shire. I believe Uncle Hector Gordon Equid lived there? I always begged my mum to take me to met him.She got close but was advised off her older deceased sister not to, as for her brother John Haley, he told her to go. Mum was very nervous. So this is when I started looking for relatives. I am friends with Rod, Cameron Equid on Facebook. I actually have message Jake Equid, Harry step grandchild. He did want to met but we never got around to it. I seen the death notice of Harry second wife years ago, and showed it to my mum. I asked why didn't I ever met my step Nanna. My mum then told me, when she went to Her father Harry funeral, Judith told her off for not seeing Harry. Mum said back, why didn't he come and see me? Judith said, Don't you think he tried. Mum brother John Haley took mum to the funeral.I have just completed a Searle family tree. I love Family history so much and would be happy 😊 to keep intouch. My dad Dave is 71 and mum pat is 70.My mum had a stroke which has slightly affect her. They live in Melton as well.
