Looking for George Herbert Blackmore born 1849 in Dublin - Snell-Samuel issue Brixham to Donnybrook

Query by BonnieJean

I have been researching my father's family for five years. I believe strongly that he was born to Samuel Blackmore and Susannah Snell shortly after they married and moved to Dublin during the exodus of the Sailing Trawler fleet from Brixham, Devon. Samuel and Susannah had a son named George who died shortly after he was born. My great-grandfather would have been born in between this still birth and the birth of Samuel. There are several trees that show George1 without any other information showing born 1849, d 1928. This could be my great-grandfather however there are no records in either Brixham or Dublin showing his birth. My father is 99 years old and will be 100 in November. I want so very much to give him his heritage before he exits the planet. Can anyone help me out??? Thanks! Bonnie Jean

Hello Bonnie Jean.
I have been trying to make sense of your message, but I remain unclear EXACTLY what you want??
I have found a George Blackmore born 1849 in Dublin in Irish 1901 Census. He has a wife Sophia born 1847 and 5 children are listed all born in Dublin between 1872 & 1886.
Is this going to help? Do you have it already?
I will try to help if I can.
Best wishes, Judy.

Hi Bonnie Jean,

The registration district for Brixham was Totnes from 1837 to 1968, check on this page: http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/totnes.html

Looking on Freebmd.org.uk I found that there is a birth registered in Totnes in the June quarter of 1849, volume 9, page 519. Have you requested that certificate?

Hi there! I'm no longer convinced that Susannah and Samuel were the grandparents. The George Blackmore in 1849 was definitely my great-grandfather above with wife Sophia. It says on the census that both George and Sophia were born in Dublin, not Brixham. So I need a generation prior to this George born in Brixham and died in Dublin. If I can find this tie in then the rest will fall into place. Thank you!

Hi Bonnie Jean,

Samuel Blackmore was born in Brixham in 1822 and moved to Ireland sometime very soon after that along with the rest of the Torbay fishermen. James Snell was born in Brixham in 1793 and his daughter Susanna married Samuel in 1847 in St. Mary's church Donnybrook, Dublin. I do not know whether Susanna was born in Brixham or Dublin but their children, including your great grandfather (George Herbert) and my great great grandmother (Anna Maria Blackmore) who was born in 1864, were definitely born in Dublin.

Keith.
