Looking for Hamiltons

Query by Abaum77

I am fairly new to geneology (this year) but I have found a lot of ancestors. I have met some new relatives and gotten help from many of them. I would like to find out how to find out about my ancestors rather than just names and facts. When I was growing up there were 2 family lores. The first was we go back to the Mayflower. That was easy and I have two familes Digory Priest and John Allerton who married Digory's daughter. Digory died the first winter. He did not bring his daughters with him on the Mayflower but they came later. The other lore was that we were related to James Hamilton-Alexander Hamilton's brother. I have not found that to be true so far.

That brings me to my roadblock. There were 4 families in Moreau NY-upstate. My roadblock is that Walter and Phebe Hamilton are buried there with Jabez and Lois Hamilton, Ransom and Clara Hamilton and Will and Martha Hamilton.I cannot find any parents. They could have the same parent. I have an idea that there is a Jabez Hamilton who could be the father. I called the town historian who said Moreau did not exsist before 1800. The town was part of Northumberland. Walter was born in 1815 in Moreau. A Jabez was mentioned in a book stating he was there in the late 1880's. But I'm stuck.

I see a Jabez Hamilton in the 1870 US Census in Moreau NY. He was 48, which puts his birth year at about 1822.

Listed in the household is:
Lois, 36 F
Willie, 18 M
Walter, 14 M
Ranson, 13 M
Jay, 11 M
Victor, 10 M
Matilda, 6 F
Caroline, 77 F
Azuba, 37 F

All listed with the surname of Hamilton, and born in NY State.

Jabez was a Farmer, the value of his property listed at $6000. Lois was a housekeeper.
Caroline is listed as "Domestic Servt". Not an unreasonable guess that this might his mother, but there's no indication of the relation.

So it seems that Ranson and Will (and their wives) are buried there with Mom and Dad. I don't think Walter and Phebe is the above Walter, because...

In the 1850 Census for Moreau, Saratogoa, NY is a Walter Hamilton age 36 with a Phebe Hamilton age 29.

In that household:
Phebe Hamilton 29
Orselia Hamilton 7
Ellen A Hamilton 4
Marthyette Hamilton 0
Clarissa Crandall 33
Stephen Crandall 11
Henriette Crandall 9

This Walter was a lawyer.

Looking at surrounding houses, I see who seems to be your Jabez Hamilton, age 29 (grocer) living with a Mary Potter, age 50, with who appear to be her children, William Potter 26, Paulinus Potter 24, and John Potter 22 as well as Leonard A Woodworth, age 8. There doesn't seem to be a matching spouse to Mary.

Scanning around, there are a *lot* of Hamiltons, so it gets messy there in Moreau!

Perhaps Jabez and Walter were brothers, walter 6 years older than Jabez.

I hope this is useful. I had fun hunting.

You are right about Jabez but he is probably the brother of Walter b 1815. There are 3 Walters-my grandfather, my great grandfather married to Laura Viele and Walter married to Phebe. But when IActually there is a another one who was in a asylum. There are 2 Carolines who lived together. Caroline was Jabez first wife. She died young but the older Caroline is 55 when Caroline was 22. Then he married Lois Deyoe. I found a Deyoe in Northumberland.

I think Jabez lived with the Potters-that's in the 1850 census but I don't know why. In another household appears to be his wife Caroline. I just noticed that Walter and Phebe didn't have a Walter. This information was given to me by a Walter-my grandfather. I did check it out but I don't know why I didn't notice that. His father was 40 in the 1900 census. He was probably the lawyer. He married a Viele.

So how do you scan around a town? The historian told me there were Hamiltons and Viele's all over Moreau now. These families are buried in Rice Cemetary which you can look up on the inernet and there they are! Thanks for looking. It was useful to see another perspective.I do think Jabez cam from Northumberland and married somebody and had a few of these people. It just hasn't worked out yet. There's a written history that talks about Jabez coming over the mountain. Usually in these histories they just say Hamilton or a hamilton.

> So how do you scan around a town?

If you're asking how I was looking at surrounding houses, I was basically flipping pages in the census to look at the surrounding families. We cannot assume 100% that the people on the same pages in a census were neighbors, but it's a pretty good chance, as the census taker was just walking from house to house.

But at any point he may jump on a horse and goes somewhere else. :-)
