Charles HARMER - London England to Wairoa New Zealand

by HarmerJohn on 2012-03-12 05:25:36

by HarmerJohn, Hastings NZ 12/3/2012: Kia ora bron4. Edwin James Harmer was the second husband of Matua Kore Pakai from Te Hauke just south of Hastings. They had 4 children, Pera(Sam), Bella, Eria and Edwin James. All of the males are buried at their marae in Te Hauke. Bella is buried in the Hasting's City cemetery. I'm a son of Edwin James. I remember, in 1961, my dad introduced me to Alma saying,'This is your Aunty'. I laughed because she was so white! Definitely, not as dark skinned as Dad. I didn't know about half brothers,or half sisters back then.
My understanding is that Aunt Alma married a Hura from Wairoa where some still live. Some have also lived in the Hastings area over recent times.
My grandfather, Edwin James moved back to Wairoa, soon after his wife Matuakore died, leaving his children behind in Te Hauke. Edwin died around 1951 and is buried in the Returned Serviceman's section of the Wairoa cemetery.

thanks for your response. Do you know what happened to edith aroha? She supposedly married harold norman day and they had a child doreen day who married derek McNeish. Doreen day died at a yound age, so their is no info from doreen or derek. I am also not sure what happened to edith, so this family seems to be very hard. Mt step-sister is a child of doreen day, but does not have anything on this family?

Edith aroha and alma were sisters.

Do you know where to look, thanks

Kia ora ano bron4. Sorry I can't help with Edith Aroha. There is a H.W. Hura, (only Hura listed) in the Hawke's Bay telephone directory for Hastings, 5 Diaz Place, Flaxmere, Hastings. Phone 06 8797678. This person will be a descendent of Alma, sister to Edith Aroha. One listing only in Wairoa telephone directory for Hura, R.V. & J.M. 49 Mitchell Road, Wairoa. Phone 06 8384554. 06 is the local access and area code for Hawke's Bay. This will undoubtedly be another descendent of Alma. I hope this is of some help to you. I must remember to regularly check this site for updates.

Kia Ora,

My name is Stephanie Paul, I am the grand daughter of Alma Rawhiti Paul (nee Harmer), my father is Bill (William) Paul who lives in Napier. My dad's father was Wi Pere Tamatea Paul. This is about all I really know in regards to this side of my family. I am however interested in finding out any information I can as I would like to start working on a family tree. Both Alma and Wi are buried up at Wharerangi Cemetery out the back of Tamatea. If anyone has any information can you please email me at stephpaul7@gmail.com.

Kia Ora e hoa má, I am the great grandaughter of Puti Mary (Mere) Harmer nee Lewis who is buried at the Hastings Cemetary block E plot no. 641 I have just found her and hope to do something with her unmarked plot of gravel where her bones lie.
Albert James is the elder brother of my Nana Madge. Their dad Charles Albert Harmer had 4 children with his first wife Alice Smith (info on this site) and when she passed away married |Puti Mere who raised them and had 9 of her own. Nana Madge had 8 children 6 born in Wairoa and because of hard times moved to Kamo, Whangarei where the youngest 2 were born.
Puti Mary whakapapa's back to Kahungunu and Rongomai Wahine. Her line comes down from their eldest son Kahukuranui and Tu Teihonga. If anybody wants to get in touch to share info contact me on kazzieboomsticks@yahoo.co.nz I live in Hawkes Bay

I made a mistake in the above post - Edwin James is the eldest brother not Albert James.

Kia Ora Whanau, Edwin James Harmer is my 2nd Great Grand Uncle, his sister Grace Joesphine is my 2nd Great Grand Mother. Have only gotten back into searching the family tree on my Mums Side and discovering the Harmer family. I grew up in Gisborne NZ but now live in Melbourne Australia. If you would like to connect on Ancestry.com I am happy to share what I have on the tree , just search for Natasha Russell. Thank you for sharing the above info.
