Looking for Info on Rees, Elizabeth and Phoebe HUGHES - Merthyr Tydfil, WALES to Otago, NEW ZEALAND 1880s

Query by ALV

I am trying to fill in some gaps for my cousin on REES HUGHES (born Llansadwrn, Wales 1841) and his wife ELIZABETH nee GRIFFITHS (born about 1844 Merthyr Tydfil). In the ENGLISH and WALES Census of 1881 they are living in Swansea with their daughter Phoebe, born about 1871 Morriston, Swansea.

There's nothing to show the leap from Swansea in 1881 to Central Otago, except a Rees Hughes is on the NZ electoral roll in 1885 at Vinegar Flat.

There is a death registration on NZ BDM for Elizabeth in 1919 and we have attached a photo of the gravestone for Elizabeth at Vinegar Flat, Cambrian's, Central Otago. Husband Rees died 1930 in Dunedin.

Elizabeth's parents were David Griffiths born about 1812 and Grace James born about 1813, both in Merthyr Tydfil .

Rees' parents were Hugh Hughes born about 1812 in Llansawel, Carmarthenshire and Jane Edwards born about 1811 in Llansadwrn.

Questions still to be answered about Rees and Elizabeth

1. Where and when were they married in Wales?

2. When did they arrive in NZ?

3. Why Cambrian's? The Otago Gold Rush was well over.

4. What happened to Phoebe? Lots of questions here depending on whether she came or not.

If you have any information, please let me know. All help will be appreciated.

My husband's ancestor was Margaret, sister of Elizabeth Hughes (nee Griffiths). I have that Margaret married William Williams, had 2 daughters Phebe b 1871 and Grace b 1865. I see Elizabeth & Rees also had a daughter Phoebe b 1871 Morriston Swansea. I have that our Phebe came to New Zealand with her aunt & uncle, Rees and Elizabeth on the Tarawera 1883. Am now wondering if the Phebes are mixed up somewhere!
There was still gold at Cambrians at this time.
Do you have any more information about David and Grace Griffiths (nee James)? Travelling to Wales in 3 years time and would love to have some sites or distant relatives to go visit. Regards Ann.

I believe Phoebe may have been spelled Phebe and she may have married Hugh Hughes in 1892. Her maiden name on the marriage registration appears to be Williams. Could that be the same Phoebe/Phebe you're looking for? Hugh is a great grandfather of mine and I'm looking into him but came across that. Could be the same, or could be one of two...hard to say at this stage. Hugh lived in Otago.
