Looking for James and Amelia Clarke Bendigo, mid-1800s

Query by vickoorie

My great-great-grandparents were James and Amelia (nee Gould) Clarke

They setrtled in Bendigo Vic and I believe they are both buried there. I know James was born in Bristol England in 1827 and Amelia born in Tipperary Ireland in 1829. I have been told they met on the ship out here but now suspect they knew each other before in Sommerset England and came out to Victoria together - married England or Melbourne don't know.

They settled in Sandhurst (Bendigo)and my great-grandfather John Clarke was born in Quarry Hill Bendigo in 1854

It was said after mining for gold, James Clarke owned a vineyard in Strathfiedsaye (Bendigo)

I want to know more about the Calrke family when James and Amelia first came out here.

Thank you,

Welcome to FamilyTreeCircle vickoorie.

This birth may interest you.

John CLARK.
Born: 1860 Quar, Victoria.
Father: James CLARK.
Mother: Amelia GOULD.
Ref: VBI #4972.

Note the spelling of the surname CLARK with no 'e'.
Birth place Quar. This could be Quartz Reef near Stawell, Victoria.

I did not find a marriage for James and Amelia in Victoria.

Where did you obtain the birth year of 1854 for your John CLARKE?

I expect you will have this death for Amelia but will include it here as it may assist other members to help you. The more details the better.

Amelia CLARK.
Died: 1885 Strathfieldsaye, Victoria, aged 55 years.
Father: unnamed GOULD.
Mother: Amelia ROCK.
Ref: VDI #14154.

Did John CLARK (or CLARKE) married a Jessie FRASER?

I put the wrong year for John Clarke's birth it should have been 1859 and yes the John Clarke above is right. I have a copy of great-grandfather John's birth certificate. Our john Clarke married Alice Murphy in Hay 1888 and the name is then spelt with an e as we spellit now.

I can't find a marriage cert for James and Amelia in australia and a cousin gave me this date for marriage. I am starting to think they were married in England before coming Australia - still looking for this.

Do you know what ship they came out on as it is said they met on the ship.

This is the right Amelia Clarke for our family and Bendigo historical say that James Clarke is buried on top of her.

Margaret Clarke

Have not located when James and Amelia arrived in Australia to date, but I did find the following marriage.

Groom: James CLARK.
Birth place: Somerset Shire.

Bride: Amelia GOULD.
Birth place: Ireland.

Year married: 1881.
Place: Victoria.

Ref: VMI #4041.

This may be the marriage for your James and Amelia.
Note the birth places given for the groom and bride.

I think this may be the marriage you could not find. I never found it with my first search because I only searched the marriages to 1865. I went further today and located this marriage.

I think it's worth a look at.
