Looking for James and Ann Bevan (neeJones)

Query by Willbevan

I believe James Bevan was born in abt 1817 in Herefordshire. I have no knowledge of his parents or siblings and this is what I am searching for. My first discovery of James and Ann is through the 1841 Wales Census. They were living in Rhymney, Wales and James was listed as a Haulier at the Rhymney Iron Works. They had a son William (2) listed as well. A second son John was born in July of 1841. In 1842 they immigrated to Australia and settled in Launceston, Tasmania. They ship that brought them to Australia was the "Royal Saxon". A daughter Mary Ann was born in Launceston in 1844 and in 1845 they moved to South Australia, where a further three sons were born.

Living next door to them in the 1841 census was a Thomas Bevan and his wife Margaret and there is a possibility that Thomas may have been a brother of James. Thomas is listed as being born in Whitney, Herefordshire.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There is only one child recorded for James and Ann in South Australia.
If they had other children the births were not registered.

Name: Thomas Henry BEVAN.
Born: 29 November 1849, Adelaide, South Australia.
Father: James BEVAN.
Mother: Ann JONES.
Ref: South Australian Birth Records.
Book 03 Page 04.

There are no births recorded for:

Henry Richard BEVAN born 03 January 1850, Port Adelaide.

William Alfred BEVAN born 24 November 1889, Port Adelaide.

I've been working with the South Australian records all day and would like to know where the births for Henry and William BEVAN came from.

Maroldme
may tell us where these South Australian births were located.

You are correct the only birth recorded in the SA BDM is for a Thomas Henry Bevan and there is confusion on that entry as well.

Records found from the Holy Trinity Church, Adelaide BaptismsLDS film #951872, show the following:
Page 226 # n/a
1850, January 3, Henry Richard born Nov 24, 1849, James and Ann bevan, Carter, River Light.
Page 407 #3256
1854 Nov 9, James born 1847, James and Ann Bevan, currie Street, Carter.
Page 408 #3257
1854 Nov 9, Thomas born Oct 9, 1854, James and Ann Bevan, Currie street, Carter.

The birth date for Thomas Henry is listed as 29 Nov 1849 and the birth date for Henry Richard is listed as 24 Nov 1849. Highly unlikely unless they were twins???? and born five days apart. Thomas Henry may have died at birth from complications of the late delivery - but we have no record. We then have Thomas being shown as born Oct 9 1854 and parents often renamed another child after one who had deceased. But as it is over 160 years since the births it is a bit hard to get actual facts.

The date you have shown for Henry richard being born, Jan 3 1850, was the date of his christening.
The only William Alfred Bevan I have in my records was born 21 feb 1876, the son of James Bevan (Jr) and Eliza Gifford

Forgot to add these details on my first response.

Thanks Bill, I feel better now.

Just for the record twins can be born several days apart. I've had these births on my lines a few times. There is a certain name for these births but I'm unable to remember it, but I'm sure someone will let us know.
