Looking for James Painter b 1820 bath somerset d 1895 Middlesex m Elizabeth clambird
This is 3x g grandfather. I cannot find him in birth or baptism records online. His marriage certificate cites Richard painter as his father.

The reason is that spelling of surnames were not stabilised until the late 19th Century. James was baptised in Walcot (now a suburb of Bath). Here he is and some of his siblings who were variously baptised under the surname of either Pinter or Painter. Father Richard and Mother Catherine. Father's occupation servant at a place called Vinter's Court.
