Looking for John Thompson of Warwick, Qld, Australia

Query by adrian4t

My husband's name is Adrian Thompson, born 24/2/1939 at Wondai, Qld Australia.

Adrian's father was Colin William John Thompson, born 7/2/1904 at Ebagoolah, Qld Australia.
Colin married Joan Monica Manthorpe at Murgon, Qld Australia, 18 Apr 1934.

Colin's father was George Thompson, born abt 1865 at Warwick, Qld Australia.
George married Marie Josephine Power at Coen, Qld Australia, 22 Feb 1903.
George's parents were John Thompson & Jane Cummins. John was recorded as 'farmer' on George's marriage cert,
so am assuming he was still alive in 1903.

Marie's parents were William Power & Marie Josephine Bourke. William was also recorded as 'farmer' on the same certificate.

Have been unable to find any further info re John and Jane, or William and Marie

Would appreciate any help

Margaret Thompson

It looks like John and Jane or Ann Jane Cummings had a few Children this is from the QLD BMD site

Births
1856/B6 Sarah Thompson John Jane Cummings
1860/C848 Alexander Thompson John Ann Jane Cummings
1863/C1170 Mary Ann Thompson John Ann Jane Cummings
1865/C1848 George Thompson John Ann Jane Cummings
1867/C2737 Jane Thompson John Ann Jane Cummings
1870/C3248 John Thompson John Ann Jane Cummings

Deaths
1923/C378 Alexander George Thompson John Thompson Ann Jane Cummings
1937/B35441 Jane Thompson John Ann Jane Cummings

Do you have George's birth certificate? it may hold some other clues.

Details from ancestry
Australia Birth Index, 1788-1922 about George Thompson
Name: George Thompson
Birth Date: 24 May 1865
Father's Name: John Thompson
Mother's Name: Ann Jane Cummings
Birth Place: Queensland
Registration Year: 1865
Registration Place: Queensland
Page Number: 14703
Registration Number: 001848

There are quite a few John Thompson's who died after 1903 and there is a possibility that he had already died before the marriage.

I found this ship arrival on ancestry

New South Wales, Australia, Assisted Immigrant Passenger Lists, 1828-1896 about John Thompson
Name: John Thompson
Birth Year: abt 1832
Age: 24
Gender: Male
Arrival Date: 24 Jan 1856
Vessel Name: James Fernie

also with him wife Anne 19, departed Armagh Ireland.

and this under Irish records

Ireland, Civil Registration Marriages Index, 1845-1958 about Anne Jane Cummings
Name: Anne Jane Cummings
Date of Registration: 1855
Registration district: Armagh
Volume: 1
Page: 330 (click to see others on page)
FHL Film Number: 101245

It does look like John died around 1870 as Ann remarried in 1871, you would need to check the details from the actual marriage certificate or a transcript.

Australia Marriage Index, 1788-1950 about Ann Jane Thomson
Name: Ann Jane Thomson
Spouse Name: Ellis Todd
Marriage Date: 8 Nov 1871
Marriage Place: Queensland
Registration Place: Queensland
Registration Year: 1871
Registration Number: 000668

and Ann Jane Thompson/Todd nee Cummings Death

Australia Death Index, 1787-1985 about Jane Todd
Name: Jane Todd
Death Date: 12 May 1913
Death Place: Queensland
Father's Name: Cummings
Registration Year: 1913

Registration Number: 004848
Page Number: 26179

This could possibly be Ann Jane's sister, they are on the same ship Sarah age 18 from Armagh, Father Joseph, Mother Ann.

New South Wales, Australia, Assisted Immigrant Passenger Lists, 1828-1896 about Sarah Cummings
Name: Sarah Cummings
Birth Year: abt 1838
Age: 18
Gender: Female
Arrival Date: 5 Feb 1856
Vessel Name: James Ternie

this is possibly her marriage, listed on QLD BMD

1859/C397 Sharpe David Cummings Sarah

this in Warwick NSW

2712/1857 SHARPE DAVID CUMMINGS SARAH WARWICK

and this on ancestry

Australia Marriage Index, 1788-1950 about Sarah Cummings
Name: Sarah Cummings
Spouse Name: David Sharpe
Marriage Date: 1857
Marriage Place: New South Wales
Registration Place: Warwick, New South Wales
Registration Year: 1857
Registration Number: 2712

possible double up or their remarriage as Sarah would only be 19 in 1857, again in may be worth while getting transcript of both to check details.

There is a possibility that this could be the death of your John Thompson, going by the name of his son Alexander, again you would need the certificate or transcript to verify details.

Death
1870/C1155 John Thompson Alexander Thompson Eliza Liney

I haven't been able to find anything on Powers side are you sure of the parents names?, there is a Josephine Maria Power born 1869 in Balarat Victoria with father William Pierce Power but mother is Ann Hunter, that's the closest I've found.

Thanks for your response. I have had the info re John & Jane from Armagh, but because of the fact that it sounded as though John was still alive when George was married, I tended to discount this connection. It is rather strange though, that there would be another George Thompson born the same year in the same place, of parents of the same name.
I have this week made connection with both the Warwick and Stanthorpe Family History Societies. Both have volunteers who do searches and have arranged for these to be undertaken Hoping for some further details from at least one of these sources.

With regard to George Thompson, there is no history available through living family members as to how many siblings he had, or if he had any at all.
There are no documents or photos that we have been able to unearth.
The info re his and Marie's (Mary) parents is on George's Marriage Cert, so at this point I see no other option but to believe what it says, but am aware that errors can be made on these certificates.

The family believes that the Power side has roots in Waterford, and that John Thompson had connections with Scotland, but no evidence for either.

I appreciate your input. Many thanks

There doesn't appear to be another George Thompson born in Queensland around that date.

I did find this George Thomson born 1866

1866/B6325 George Thomson John Emma Hill

I have had a look at all the deaths for the John Thompson & Ann Jane Cummings children i listed previously, they are all recorded as either Jane Cummins or Ann Jane or Jane Cummings with father John Thompson, with the exception of Mary Ann Thompson I didn't manage to find her death as yet.

Is this death for your George Thompson in 1934 parents listed as John & Jane Cummins

1934/C4001 George Thompson John Jane Cummins

Do you know George's occupation at time of marriage?

If he was a miner at the time of his marriage this could possibly be him

Australian Electoral Rolls, 1903-1980 about George Thompson
Name: George Thompson
Gender: Male
Electoral Year: 1903
State: Queensland
District: Herbert
Subdistrict: Coen River Diggings

occupation - miner

and George & Mary in 1905

Thank you again.
The electoral roles info seems spot on. Our George was a miner (and sandal wood cutter). As he was married in January 1903 it makes sense that Mary would not be mentioned until 1905.

I have today ordered George's Birth Cert. Had inquired re his death cert, but the young man handling my inquiry checked the computer entries and said there was no extra info with his death. He said I could expect to find the birthplace of George's parents on his Birth Cert. Here's hoping!

We will have to wait about a week for this to arrive, so I will await the arrival of this certificate, plus any response from Warwick and/or Stanthorpe.

Have also written to a family in Coen whom we know to have had contact with the Thompsons - one was a witness at George's marriage. As there is still a business in Coen listed in this name, we are hoping there might be some documented history or memorabilia from the 1900s.

Will let you know when there is something to report

Since the above posts I have been to Warwick & visited the Family History Assoc.
The only names that fit time wise are the John & Anne Jane Thompson previously mentioned.
There is a headstone for john Thompson in the Warwick Cemetery, Old Presbyterian Section. He died in 1870. His wife, who remarried after his death is buried with him, along with Ellis Todd, her 2nd husband. They died in 1913 & 1919 respectively.
I have a little more info on the Thompson children, and also the 3 Todd daughters born to Jane, if anyone is interested.
There is no record of Marie Power in Stanthorpe, even though this was mentioned in George Thompson's Marriage Cert.
I had applied for a birth cert for Marie, but BDM says there is no record.
I have received George Thompson's birth cert which states that his parents were both born in Armagh.

I've some info on the THOMPSON family which you may like to have.
My research has been with the IVORY family - my grandmother was a daughter of Anne Jane & Ellis Todd.
Happy to hear from you via email if you wish.

Hi Carol
Thanks for your response. Since posting the above last year I have acquired John's death cert. and John & Jane's marriage cert from Ireland. It has been my intention to send for their birth certificates in the future. If you have anything further to add I would be very interested and if you are interested in the marriage
certificate I would be happy to send a copy.

Thanks
Margaret
