Looking for LEVERTON of Nottingham/NSW
I am looking for information on my paternal grandmothers family, the Levertons. All mostly around the Nottingham area although I have information that my great, great, great, great grandfather Benjamin Leverton came over to Australia (NSW) in 1936 on a convict ship leaving his wife Maria (Elliott) back in Nottingham. Not sure what happened to him in Australia but it seems he died in 1939 aged around 36.
I would be interested to know if he had any family in Australia as I now live in Sydney, NSW.

I could not find a Benjamin Laverton on the convict register from England. I did find these (different arrival dates) It would appear that he was convicted in military court in Quebec. Was your Benjamin a soldier or sailor ?

It is possible that John & Henry were brothers, John's baptism has father as James mother Elizabeth, Henry's has Samuel & Elizabeth. I couldn't find any other children for James & Elizabeth could be transcript or an original parish entry error.

Thanks for that, there is some info here I didn't know. This is definitely my relative.
On 26 June 1836 Benjamin LEVERTON/LIVERSTON at the age of 30 arrived in New South Wales on the Recovery having left a wife and three children in England on the 26 October 1835.
He would have been shipped from Quebec to England then to Australia.
Britain sent troops to put down rebellions in upper and lower Canada.
Of the 280 convicts on the Recovery there were only about 8 or 9 which had been tried in Quebec.
He was assigned to the government on arrival in New South Wales.
NSW State Records refer to him in their convict index and death as Ben Leverston. He died at the general hospital in Newcastle on the 16 May 1839, contrary to the record above..There is no record of a ticket of Leave being granted.
He was the son of John Leverton and Elizabeth Toplis and had been married to Maria Elliott 1791-1867
Ticket of Leave men were permitted to marry. He didn't have a ticket.
