Looking for Louisa HAMPTON c.1830 of California
I don't have a lot of information so I'll give you the story as I know it......
It starts with Joseph GOODSELL, who was born around 1820-1830 in Lancashire, England.
He left England for America but I don't know when. I would be guessing, but the Californian gold rush of 1848-1855 may have been his reason.
Joseph met a woman, Louisa HAMPTON, and it is thought that she was born in California.
We don't know much about Louisa except what has been passed down in story. She was said to be half Native American and half African American.
Joseph and Louisa had a son Walter Thomas GOODSELL on January 15 1859, born in California. I don't know of any marriage or if there were any other children.
In 1869, Joseph and his 10 year old son Walter sailed to NSW Australia, where they settled in the Nowra/Shoalhaven area south of Sydney. I have not been able to find them on any shipping passenger list.
Louisa did not come with them to Australia. Had she already died? Not sure. When Walter got married in 1901, the records show his mother as deceased.
I realise it is a needle in a haystack, but if anyone can help me connect a few dots I would be most grateful.
Louisa HAMPTON has been an unanswered question for a long time.
