Looking for Matilda Metcalf

Query by DougGillis

I am looking for information on Martha Matilda Metcalf, born 1844 in Waverly, Yancey County, NC to Jake Metcalf, son of James Metcalf of Shelton Laurel, NC. Matilda, or Tilda, married Elbert Gillis on 10 Dec 1864. Elbert's father was Laban A. Gillis, born 1809 in TN and mother, Nancy Mitchell. Elbert Gillis served as a private in the Union Army, Company K of the NC 3rd Mounted Infantry Volunteers, which he joined at age 18 in March 1865 in Burnsville, NC. Matilda filed for a pension as Matilda M. Anders. I also want to know what happened to Elbert Gillis and where he is buried and who Matilda's husband Anders was. Matilda was the mother-in-law of John F. Wheeler, who had married her daughter Florence, or Flora, Gillis. Matilda is listed in the 1910 US Censes as Matilda M. Anders, head of household, next to John F. Wheeler. In the 1920 US Census, Matilda is listed as a member of the John F. Wheeler household. Matilda died in 1936 and is buried at the California Creek Cemetery located near Mars Hill, NC.
